Found Pigeon in Brooklyn, NY

Hi,

Last night I found a very disoriented pigeon. I took her in and put her in a large bird cage. She woke up this morning quite alert, and has touched the bread and water I put in the cage for her.

She is a very nice looking bird and doesn't seem to be a wild pigeon. White with brown and grey markings.

I'd like to find a nice home for her. Can anyone direct me to someone living in Brooklyn who would like to take her in?

Thank you for helping this needy pigeon.

The bird may not be feeling well, if it was disoriented there might be some issues going on.

Please feed the pigeon some wild bird seed, as bread is not an appropriate diet for the bird.

The adoption forum would be the appropriate place to post, does the bird have any bands on its legs?

Crissa,

Welcome to Pigeon-Talk and thanks for taking in this pigeon! Does she have any bands on her legs? There is a group in New York that helps with rescued pigeons, New York City Pigeon Rescue Central group, at http://nycprc.org/Help.html. You might also want to have a look at the information in http://www.pigeons.biz/forums.showthread.php?t=11265 in the meantime.

You mentioned that she was disoriented. Have all those symptoms disappeared? Can she fly okay? What do her poops look like?

If she seems very quiet, it might be because she isn't feeling well and doesn't have the energy be fiesty. Make sure she is kept warm. If you have a heating pad, you can set it on low and cover with a towel, to see if she wants to sit or lay on it. Just make sure she can move off of it if she wants. They will seek heat if they need it.

Please remove the bread as that is not good food for pigeons. Wild bird seed would be better, but if you don't have any, you could use unpopped (no salt or additives) popcorn, uncooked grain (barley, rice, wheat, millet, etc.) and legumes (dried peas or lentils). Make sure the water dish is deep enough since pigeons drink by immersing their beak and sucking up water.

A lot of information, but I wanted to cover all the bases.
