Help calculating dosages.Hi i was given some Ciprofloxacin 500 mg tabs by an old fancier that used to use them. I have a bird that has paratyphoid, i know this a good treatment for this disease but i am totally unsure how i convert these tabs to a dosage in the water and how to actually disolve them (if that needed).
Any help much appreciated, i have around 30 birds. |

Dosage is 5~20 mg/kg calculated on ~400 g pigeon will be 6~7 mg twice a day.
1/2 tablet in 100 ml water should give you 2,5% solution ... Use it for 5~7 days P.S. Different sources show different dosages I would stick to bit higher one. Check also if medicine is not outdated. And it is allways good idea to ask people who used them about dosage as I'm giving you info from the book. Last edited by plamenh; 10th August 2009 at 02:14 PM. |

This 100ml is your medicine. You need 5ml syringe. Fill it with 2~3 ml medicine. Take the bird, open the beak and pour medicine in the throat. Be careful not to drawn the bird. You can do it in 2~3 portions and wait for bird to swallow. Repeat procedure twice a day with each bird you treat.
Keep medicine in the fridge or below 25 degre celsius - in the dark place. |

Hi,
Just a suggestion, but you might be better off dissolving the 1/2 tablet in 10cc of water. The 10ml of medicine would have 25 milligrams of medicine per 1ml/cc. So you would give .2ml to .3ml every 12 hours. Please refrigerate as indicated and shake very well before pulling a dose. The reason I suggested a more concentrated mix is getting 2-3ml of medicine into a bird, if you are inexperienced can be a little tricky at times. Getting a smaller dose is sometimes quicker and easier. I hope this helps, Karyn |
