Help finish an arguement.

Okay first are feral pigeons homing?

Second if you take feral adults and put them in a cage will they ever breed?

Thanks

Hello,

Strange questions and very abrupt! lol

1) Feral pigeons are not homing pigeons per say...but they do have the ability to home to a certain capacity. It's something that is locked within their natural genes as a species.

2) Yes, given time and acclimation, two feral pigeons in a cage of the opposite sex will eventually breed.

Please don't tell us that you are trying to capture feral/wild pigeons to make them your pets/hostages!

Yes...feral pigeons do have a homing ability. I've had them travel miles and miles and miles and miles...to get back to my place.
Yes, of course they'll breed and breed and breed and breed...

* In the sense, will they come back to a location they're used to, yes. At least that's been my experience.

** We had a 'mated' pair of ferals that were wing damaged so they stayed with us & yes, they produced a couple of adorable babies, who, by the way were released when they were ready.

If you're referring to just taking two adult ferals & caging them without reason, e.g. their being ill or injured, I would strongly discourage it.

I believe most feral pigeons have bred with wayward homers lost on race days, so a feral homer may be a young race bird, or even an old race bird that found a new home, especially if you can make out a band on some of them, Also if you find a flock of birds with some of them banded you can bet that many of those that are not banded are the offspring of those lost racers, so yes ferals can and will have that homing instinct bred into them! I've seen many a so called "feral
" bird that looked way too good to be just a common wild pigeon!

I think that nowdays, if you could capture anything wild (legally) and confine it under the correct conditions, it would breed.
When I first started with pigons, My wife and I decided to purchase.
That way, we had reciepts for our pets, incase anyone gave us any problems.

It seems the difference between feral and not, is a loft and a keeper to give food on a daily basis. I would want to come back to that if I was a pigeon.

How can you tell a homer from a feral. Is it just the crest on the beak?

If you're around pigeons long enough, you can easily tell the difference (most of the time). A REAL feral has these little beady red eyes that you won't see in a homing pigeon. PLUS.........a homer SHOULD have a leg band. That's a dead give away.
I have seen "ferals" that look healthy as a horse and are as big as any bird in my loft, so it makes you wonder if there's some other blood flowing thru their veins.
There's three that I see up at the feed store, Blue Bars, and they are beautiful. Can't get very close, but from a distance, they sure are slick and pretty.

Usually, a racing homer has an eye cere ( a light colored circle around it's eye), the thing on it's beak is called a cere also. Some pigeons have wattle (carrier pigeons) Some people like it, some don't.
Wild pigeons don't have eye ceres.
Racing homers are bigger than regular pigeons. (stronger)
Homers would include any pigeon that would return home from a distance.
