You can look and should be able to see the skin under the nail. Trim to just a little befor the skin.

Not very far. If you cut the quikening. You can stop the bleeding with shaving stiptic. I used a fingernail clipper but they are already sharp again. I think they have smuggled in a knife sharpener.

Thank you both. My birds nails are very sharp and every time I pick them up, they cut me. Can pigeons bleed to death?

They wont bleed to death if you do cut the quick, but it does hurt (like breaking the skin under our nails).
I use Baking Soda to stop the bleed for my birds. It works like a charm, and it's in every kitchen .Hilary Dawn

I use bricks as perches for my birds and their nails are kept from growing too long or too sharp. Except for one of my birds, who doesn't like the bricks everyone else has well trimmed nails.

Reti is right....the bricks are a good idea. Many guinea pig owners use bricks or a rough piece of tile as well to help keep their pet's nails from growing long and sharp. Plus, in the guinea pig's case, a piece of tile in the cage makes a cool place for them to lay on in the hot weather.
