how to treat external parasites?

today i was looking at one of my young bids (about 2 months old) and i have noticed red parasites on some of his flight feathers i am beginning to worry because i don't want it to spread to my other birds. How can i treat it? i've had a friend tell me to use bug spray and spray under the wing a small amount. will that work?

You can get a good lice and mite spray at any pet store or pigeon supply containing pyrethrins, OR you can dust the birds with Sevin5 garden dust, just be careful not to get it in their eyes.
You can also treat your loft, nest boxes, etc with Diatomaceous Earth

As Msfreebird has said, pet shops sell bird spray that will work. And the Sevin 5% garden dust works great. I just apply it with a small powder puff. Kills them right away. You can also powder the cracks in the nest boxes with it, or spray them with the bird spray. Don't ever use a bug spray. It's too strong, and is bad for the birds. Powder all the birds, but stay away from their head and face. Get especially under the wings where the bugs like to go, and under the tail.

I have used Sevin 5% garden dust around the outside of the dove aviary & it works well.I also use Diatomaceous Earth {I do not put Diatomaceous Earth on my doves!}.
