Legislation to Ban Pigeon Shoots in Pennsylvania

We recently heard from representatives at the Humane Society that there
is a new and vigorous push by the Humane Society of the United States
(HSUS) to lobby in Pennsylvania against the canned and "contest" shoots.
The object is to stop the pigeon netters by destroying any hope they have
of making money off of the stolen birds.

Please support the HSUS in their current push to pass legislation (SB 1150/HB 2130) in Pennsylvania which will effectively ban "contest shoots."

For all of those concerned and/or furious about the persistent pigeon
nettings, the HSUS is attempting to stop the demand and hopefully impact(if
not completely halt) all netting.

Please go to the
[https://community.hsus.org/campaign/...anned_shoots2] HSUS website

For more details and/or information, please contact Patrick
Kwan(pkwan@humanesociety.org) and volunteer to go to Philadelphia to help
with the current lobbying.

or sspeed@humanesociety.org.

Please take action on this issue.

A little update with a # to call...

HSUS is lobbying in PA to support the proposed legislation to stop live "contest" pigeon shoots. The bill is being voted on in committee on March 18th. You can help to make calls. Casey of the PA HSUS will provide you with a list of ten HSUS members in PA to call and encourage them to call their state senators in support of the bill in order to get a positive vote and move it out of committee. She will also provide a script with talking points. If you want to help make calls, call Casey at 301-721-6407.

If you can think of others who might care enough to make calls, please pass this on.

I know people don't like to get involved but, I hope at least the members in Penn. will make some phone calls . If there are no pigeon shoots in Penn. then there will be NO MARKET for the netted pigeons in NYC. It will benefit both the NYC and Penn feral flocks. Please people ....make a few calls.

I think letter writing is in order, no matter where you are from. Letters coming from people who identify themselves as pigeon owners (racers, show, pet, whatever) who recognize that there is a great deal of conflict over the feral pigeon populations in urban areas and in particular NY metropolitan area, and express support and gratitude for the existence and enforcement of netting laws might have some effect. It might be useful for TPTB to know that people all over the country (the world!?) are aware of what is going on there and are watching. One would hope.

Here is an important update...

Hello,

The committee vote on the pigeon shoots Bill has been delayed.

There is a trip to Philadelphia organized by the Humane Society of the US on Saturday, April 5th to help with conducting public outreach for the Bill.

If you are able to join Patrick Kwan, New York State Director and Sarah Speed, Pennsylvania State Director for The Humane Society of the United States to speak with PA residents requesting them to contact their legislators regarding the Bill that will help put an end to pigeon shoots and nettings, the details follow.
We will meet together for lunch for a debriefing on the Bill and its status, and then we will station ourselves in high pedestrian traffic areas to do the public outreach.

April 5th, noon
Meet for lunch and debriefing at Kingdom of Vegetarians Restaurant at 129 North 11th Street, off Cherry Street. The restaurant offers a $10 all-you-can eat dim sum special. More information on the restaurant is available at: http://www.yelp.com/biz/kingdom-of-v...t-philadelphia
After lunch and the debriefing, we will divide into groups of 2-3 with clipboards and literature to distribute to PA residents. We’ll end the day around 5pm.

Let Patrick Kwan know (pkwan@humanesociety.org) if you can make it, and please do not hesitate to contact him should you need any additional info.

The most economical and convenient transportation method from NYC to Philly may be the Chinatown buses which will drop you off right near the restaurant. The buses are about $20 roundtrip, here are a couple companies: www.apexbus.com and www.today-bus.com Other options include www.amtrak.com and www.greyhound.com

Please do make sure to arrive by noon at Kingdom of Vegetarians Restaurant on April 5th so that we can all start on time! Thanks!

Here’s an article on the HSUS website with more information about pigeon shoots

http://www.hsus.org/hunt/news/making...ry_092007.html

An action alert for PA is available here:

https://community.hsus.org/campaign/...al_trap_shoots

Please don’t hesitate to let Patrick know should you have any questions. Thanks again!

Patrick Kwan,
New York State Director
