Some questions....
1. Did you 'quarantine" those birds for AT LEAST three weeks before putting them into the loft with your other birds? 2. How old are the new birds? You say they are "03" birds -- but are you SURE that the birds were hatched in 03? And when in 03? If they were hatched late in the year, or even earlier this year (04).... the breeder would have used 03 bands, but the birds still might be only 9-10 months (or younger) old.... and maybe just aren't ready to be good parents (they are still 'teenagers', realy.... LOL) 3. You say one of your birds is going "wack" --- please exlain? From your brief description, I wonder about PMV or paratyphoid. 4. You say you have babies "grow in the egg but doesn't make it". Do you mean they start to hatch, but don't manage to peck their way out.... or do they not even grow that long? Again, it could be paratyphoid. Not fertilizing eggs is another symptom of that disease, unfortunately ![]() * * * If it were me, I'd be NOT putting any more birds into this loft right now. Figure out what is going on with the birds you have. Don't try and hatch any babies right now --- get the birds healthy first. Hatches this late in the year rarely do very well anyway, with winter coming. |

one of my fantails tail is going wack its side ways lol i hope it isnt sick
Hello Erik, I would suggest isolating this fantail from the others & observing him very closely. Please let us know if he is displaying any other unusual behavior. If he appears to be 'out of sorts' I would place him on heat for a bit. Please keep us posted. Cindy ![]()

Fantails breed better with tails and ventarea trimmed. If you take the first 6 tail feathers on each side of the birds tail Trim them as close to the tail/ body as you can. Then the feathers arounf the vent area. trim them as close to the body as you can. They will fertile eggs much better. As far as clear eggs or fertile eggs not hatching . Chilled eggs fromover crowding fighting and such. may be the problem. What breeds do you keep besides the fans? And this time of year at least for the U. S. is not really breeding season. The moult is going on or finishing. Basicly the off season. But a person can breed. And the birds would be slow in going down on eggs. It would be wiser to hold. Until after the first of the year.

ok... I missed the "Fantail's tail" part.... LOL Sorry -- I was thinking that the BIRD was looking sideways.
As to the eggs... do you mean they actually hatch--- but the babies die at 3-5 days of age? But some do survive? When we had a fantail, she was a terrible mother her first year. She would abandon babies at the 3-5 days age, over and over again. Or, she would sit on them, but not feed them. Once she was in her second year, she became one of the best "moms" in the loft.... and fostered many a race bird for us. ![]() |
