not trying to talk you out of the grill flooring...but I think to use that the holes would have to be big enough for the poop to fall through...well that would allow mice and snakes in, and if the holes where small then the poop wouln't fall through and you would have to get a wire brush and scrub it...sounds like a hassle IMO...I feel a smooth plywood floor is easy to scrape with a long handeld scraper, put in a bucket(poop) and your done...just a thought.

I went and visited a guy from a local racing club to see his loft.
he has something like this in his YBS section

I thought it was a great idea to keep the Young Birds healthy.
so they wont be walking in they own poop.
I plan on making the loft all wood floors with that kinda grill floor on top of it in the YBS section.
Not a good idea?
the extra work doesnt bother me.
I gave the US Army 9 years of my life LOL

I agree with SW......I know people who have the explanded metal floors....they also have snakes in the loft, puppies that get under the loft and chew birds feet off, mice, etc..............
But every "nay" you get on wire floor, you'll get a "yea"......so it's up to you.

When you visited the loft, did you walk on these grids? Did it seem sturdy and not shift when walked on?

yes very sturdy.
It was like walking on those grates you see in a city sidewalk.
I even think thats what he used lol.
He told me a buddy who worked for the city got it for him and they just cut pieces to a size they can be lifted and cleaned under

Semi trucks frequently have grid catwalks between the tractor and the trailer....Usually aluminum and quite expensive, unless you can find a wrecking yard that specializes in big trucks, I would think.

I always thought that if you did have a grate floor, it'd be a bit hard to clean. Because not everything is gonna fall through, and it seems like it'd be a pain to get in there and scrape off. I think it'd be neat to have like...wire sections under the perches, but with like...a pannel under, a bit lower, so nothing can crawl into the loft through the wire. Also the droppings would fall onto the pannel, and you could slide it out from under the loft, scrape, and slide back in. Imagine it like a big parakeet cage with the pans for floors you slide out to clean. Of course that would be a lot easier/less expensive for small lofts

Just my little opinion (or is it big... I forget ) but If you ever want to keep pigeons for any type of sport; racing, performance, or showing... You should avoid metal floors. For Racing and rollers or high flyers, many of us know that the birds can't come fully into shape on these and they fall out of shape very easily. About 8 years ago when I was building my new loft here at the new house The new big thing in Europe was grated floors, I passed them up and went for the old plywood. Best decision I probably made with the new loft. If you go to Belgium not a single loft of anyone that does well will have grated floors. Long story short, listen to the pigeon masters (no Renee not me, the Belgians) and kick that idea to the curb. I'm told that these are like Some of the wire that some people have in their aviaries that the birds climb and it messes their feathers. So if you are going to keep birds for show and want to actually win something this would be a bad idea also. But if you are just keeping birds to look at and don't care how their feathers are or what kind of shape they are in; go right on ahead and get these floors. They do make cleaning easier; last time I checked your not supposed to like to scrape the floors. Its part of the love/hate relationship with your pigeons.
