minced garlic directly in food?i know raw garlic can be potent and burn yur thoat (from own experience) so is it okay to cook pre-minced garlic then sprinkle in with pigeon food that way instead of just placing in their water? or will it still be too potent for them?

Hi Dirtybert,
Garlic is another one of those foods/herbs that has its potency raw. Although great in cooked food, much of it's medicinal value is lost or modified to the point of diminishing returns through heating. In fact, if purchased as a supplement, one also has to do their homework on the company that is doing the manufacturing and how they have processed the garlic, as not only where the garlic was grown, but how it has been processed will determine how much allicin is present in the offered commercial product. I like the prices at the Walgreen's Drug store, but when I'm trying to use something for medicinal value, I find I'm alot better off going to a store that specializes in herbs for medicinal value, and so I pay a little more. But, it's worth the quality difference. Anyway, fresh, liquid extract or freeze dried seems to be the way to go to get the allicin, which is what your looking for, unless you just want the pigeons to have a gourmet experience, which would be just fine as well. I know mine all seem to like the powdered Garlic which I add to their Olive Oil glistened Seeds.
Doves like it, Pigeons like it. It is very cute when they land on your shoulder with Garlic-Breath. I imagine the fresh raw Garlic is of course better, but I have not tried that yet... Phil Las Vegas |

Those are easy to pop down a couple of days a week OK Treesa - just what kind of pigeons you got - I don't think I've ever got anything down my guy's throat without a major wrestling match and lots of pecking?NAB :-) |

I have homing pigeons, Rollers, Satinette's and Bandits. They are used to it as I'm always fussing with them. Some of them struggle a little, but I am confident, never hesitate, and they give in. I can almost do it blindfolded. ...but of course I wouldn't do that. I hold them against me, open beak genly with both hands, hold beak open with one hand and pop the capsule in, close the beak, and rub their neck gently in downward motion. I wear an apron with several pockets (work apron from Home Depot), that holds garlic capsules, and anything else I need.

Do you give them the soft gel type whole or bust it and squeeze it down their throat?
