My New Friend

I have a new friend! She doesn't have a name, but she is a little finch. She is very sweet, and acts like a bird that was hand-raised and released. My friend's dad found her and brought her to me yesterday evening. She has hurt her right eye pretty bad, the other one is lazy, and her shoulder is scraped up (not bad though). My rehabilitator is on vacation, and I don't know what to do for her eye. Pictures are in my album "My Rescues", and she is the album cover. The good thing is she is eating by herself now, but I'm still going to hand-feed her some to re-hydrate her (i still haven't seen her drink anything). Oh, and she needs a name...

She's a cutie, I had one for years that couldn't be released.
I always feed my wild rescues Hill's Prescription Diet - a/d. Even seed eaters. I dilute it a little with water and feed it with a dropper. They like it so much, they'll grab the dropper with their beak and do all the work, you just squeeze the dropper slowly. Great for re-hydrating.
Good luck with her.

Your finch is a boy .. thought that might be helpful information when choosing a name . The boys have the orange on the head and chest and the females are completely brown.

Keep a close watch on the eyes. Finches are prone to pox and conjunctivitis at least here in California. Can't really tell from the pics whether the eyes seem to be injured or if something else is going on.

A topical eye antibiotic wouldn't hurt...something like Gentamicin ophthalmic drops has been prescribed for my parrots in the past....dunno where you can get anything like this over-counter, however...

The dark pic is of his bad side. the one of his on top of the cage is his good side. His left eye was poked or something and had been bleeding (its not anymore though. thank God!), and his right eye looks like it is a lazy eye (its like sunken into the socket -one of my starling's eyes look like it and it was lazy.)

We have gotten a lot of finches lately at the Wildlife rehab center I work at in PA and they all had conjunctivitis so that may be what he has. If he does it is highly contagious and can easily be passed by touch from one bird to the next soo definitely be very careful. I am sure you already have the bird quarantined..

I just moved my zebra finches into the house last week. They love hanging from the ceiling in the loft. I had them in front of the window where the could get some sun and a nice breeze. Didnt think they were that loud til the other day when I was easy 40 yards away and could still hear them calling. Its such a cheerful sound.
