Need Pigeon Bailed From South LA Shelter

If anyone can please go get this bird out of the South LA Shelter, please let me know. It is a banded pigeon that has apparently been traced and owner has declined to go pick it up. I will take the bird but need somebody to go get it out as soon as possible:

For more information about this animal, call:
South Los Angeles Animal Care and Control Center at (888) 452-7381
Ask for information about animal ID number A913412

If you can assist with this, PM, e-mail, or call me for some additional information that may cut down on the "red tape".

Terry

Having some trouble getting them out though,
I am sending you a private message..

i'm working with firstimer on getting this guy out. between the three of us let's hope we can get him free and clear of the south la shelter (not always an easy task - they can be pretty grumpy about things).
thanks terry!

Thanks Firstimer and Fallenweeble. I spoke with Firstimer on the phone, and I think everything is good to go for you to get this pigeon. I appreciate all your efforts and know from talking to an officer at this shelter today that they aren't the most cooperative of folks. Hopefully things have gotten resolved in such a way that you won't have any further trouble at SLA as long as you tell them you are picking up and transporting to me in Orange County.

The pigeon was picked up from the shelter at 3:30 PM California time today. I'll let Firstimer and Fallenweeble take it from here!

Sooooo happy that this little guy is safe and sound!
Bless you guys for working so hard to save him!

I have a question that I've been wanting to ask for awhile since I've read a number of times the probs. you guys have with shelters....why do the shelters give you guys such a hard time taking these little guys to loving homes??? What the heck do they want with them? I thought they would be happy to get them out of there.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help me understand this finally!!!

If you are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation and fill out the paperwork to become an approved rescue with the shelters, you don't really have many problems. Once you are an approved rescue, you can pretty much pull whichever bird(s) and animal(s) you want and don't have to pay any adoption fees. Without this approved rescue status, you are kind of at the mercy of the shelter as to how much or how little they are going to cooperate. Fortunately, most of them are grateful to have the help for the birds and make it as easy as possible .. that just wasn't the case today.

Not being a non-profit makes things difficult for us, and I ended up having to fax the shelter proof that I did not live in Los Angeles (city or county), did have an exisitng rescue even though not non-profit, and kind of throw some names around.

The problem today was that both Firstimer and Fallenweeble were being "held hostage" by a municipal code that says nobody can have pigeons in LA city/'county unless muni code 5359 which has to do with any loft/coop being at least 50 feet from the nearest neighbor, yada, yada, yada. The officer at the shelter was being very rigid (I'm being polite) in his enforcement of this code. I guess as long as he thought the bird was going to Orange County, he didn't really care. I'm just glad he was satisfied with what I faxed him, and hopefully there won't be any further problems with getting pigeons out of this shelter.

I am afraid that a kindly animal care technician is probably going to catch some flack over this as when I mentioned her name and the fact that she had e-mailed me about this bird, I was told flat out by the officer that she was "just" an animal care technician and didn't know anything about the laws. She is a nice person and has helped a lot of pigeons, so I really hope this all just kind of blows over with no fallout on her.

thanks

thank you to terry and firstimer!
another pigeon salvaged!
it makes me so happy to know that there are such great folks in the world who really care to make a difference to animals in need, especially animals that get overlooked so often like pigeons and such.
you guys rock.
and regarding the la shelter system . . .
most of the la shelters are more than happy when someone comes in to help pigeons but the sla shelter is notorious for professionally harboring petty tyrants who seem to relish making things difficult for the animals in their care and the humans who are trying to help them. i practically had to get into a fistfight their last spring in order to get a so called "vicious" minpin out of that place (and by the way the vicious min pin in snuggling with me as i write this - he is just soooooooo ferocious). frankly i'm shocked that anything makes it out of the south la shelter alive . . .
which is all the more reason to thank terry and firstimer again for helping get "bunny" and "jonathan" out of sla this week.
ya'll are awesome.

I belong to the CSI Shelter Rescue Group, and from what I see there .. most DON'T make it out alive from the SLA. It's very sad, and we should all do what we can do to help. So .. it's PIGEON POWER today! The pigeon is out and safe, and we should all be happy!

For ALL you members .. just go and have a look at http://www.petfinder.com .. what's needing help in your area. For the birds, it's a bit tricky but just look at the pull downs and keep going .. Keep choosing other .. you can then lose your heart to all the rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese, AND pigeons and other birds ..

Terry

On Monday the 26th of November we were able to get this white pigeon out of the same animal shelter, we named him Jonathon. His mouth looks nice and clean and pink, and he had three zip ties on each leg. We cut thoes off. He is also clipped
The pigeon that is the topic of this thread, (top left corner) is the one we call Bunny cause she is as soft as a bunny. mouth looks clean and pink, not clipped, and has a band on each leg.
They knew each other there at the shelter and so we thought they might enjoy each others company. And they really seem too.
Terry I sent you the info from the band in a PM.
Terry, can’t thank you enough for your help.
I can finally get some sleep knowing that these birds are no longer at that shelter.
I will also pray that your informant wont get into any trouble as well. And also Thank you to f. weeble for all her help.

Terry/F.Weeble...Thanks for the education with regard to shelter adoptions.
Also to Firstimer for helping to save Bunny...glad she and Jonathan met up again as forever buddies...the pics are adorable and the story so touching!

I don't blame you for wanting to punch that guy....He surely sounds like the kind that would get my 'Italian' ruff up enough to have a few guys pay a nice visit to him!!!

Terry, soooo wonderful of you to have paved the way for Bunny to get out of there. Sounds like an awful place...poor little animals.
I'm going to pray not only for the 'technician' but also for that crazy guy! I guess I'm ignorant of such happenings at shelters...the one in my town is very nice with friendly loving volunteers. My daughter and I used to spend summers helping clean cages/brush the little rabbits and such. Very clean place. We used to pick the animals that were least likely to get adopted and bring them home...so I understand about an animal being deemed 'vicious' whom really is a snuggle-bug just wanting love and care.

Y'all should pat yourselves on the back....If I could reach through the screen, I would give you each a few pats myself....actually just did it on my screen with a blessing upon you guys!
