New loft for breeders/Prices on pigeonsHi guys, i will be building a new loft with the dimensions 5 ft high 6 ft wide and 6ft long in about 5-6 days. It will only have my breeders in it though, how many pigeons do you think a loft that size can keep (breeders). Because i am planning to get more fancy pigeons.
Also are these good rates on fancy pigeons? First pair of fancy ($50) Second Pair of fancy ($40) Third Pair of fancy ($30) Fourth Pair of fancy ($20) Fifth Pair of fancy ($10) Sixth pair Free Homers: Five really nice homers, $50 ?? Do these prices seem good? By the way the guy has many types of fancy pigeons. Some include Komonor tumblers germain owl old dutch capuchine |

The terms "Nice" and "Good" are very subjective. A trip to our local "Farmers Market" will often have any number of "Fancy" pigeons available for a few dollars each. Sadly, it is also the site of a puppy mill, where "Purebred" dogs are also available at "Good" prices. I am of the thinking, that with pigeons, or any other thing in life, if the merchant focuses his pitch on his low prices, he may be doing that to divert your attention away from the low value. Quality, costs money, and at the end of the day, often represents the best value. Purchasing a show dog, pigeons or whatever....I personally would prefer to find a reputable breeder and secure quality stock, and expect to pay a fair price. "Fancy" pigeons are show birds, so I would find a breeder who competes in the shows and who has won. I would attend a number of shows and talk to various breeders of the type of breed I was interested in. I would look at the stock and handle them, and attempt to obtain a few good pairs. Pigeons reproduce very fast, and your typical "Fancy" pigeon can be purchased very inexpensively, as the market demand for average or typical is very low. The market for exceptional is where the demand is, and that is why very high quality demands higher prices. There are exceptions, but low prices and low quality often go hand in hand, which is true with just about everything.

If you are going to breed and show them, I would buy from a show person as Warren said and pay the price.(what ever they may ask
)...but if you just want some pretty birds to have and enjoy you can get them cheaper as they may not be show quality but still very pretty. It seems the prices you listed are average as I have checked into getting some fancy non show pigeons, but it just depends on who is doing the selling too. for a white fan tail pair I have seen one for 5 bucks from the guy down the road to 150.00 for a show pair...buy from a nice loft that takes care of their birds well also. ![]()

In response to the loft size question, I wouldn't put more than 12-15 pigeons in a loft that size. That is including babies. So I guess if you are going to be putting breeders in there, I would limit it to 3 pair. Dan |
