I buy my Grit at PetCo. It's small grained, but seems to work quite well and has the needed calcium. I HAVE used grit for pigeons from the feed store, but it's much coarser...
Hope this helps. Shi/Squeaks/Dom/Gimie/WoeBeGone ![]() Last edited by mr squeaks; 3rd September 2009 at 10:05 PM. |

They need some type of grit--oyster shell works good

You could buy oyster shell for calcium, but it will NOT take the place of the grit.

I use grit from the feed store (red and oyster) - BUT I also use the two you can get at Pet Smart...just in case...one is for finches and one is for parrots Hi Calicium...so you could likely supplement the one week with one from Pet Smart.

when my friend runs out he tosses so gravel off the roads into there coop they will pick out what they want and then you can toss the extra but where that goes wrong is the calcium but it will give you a few days to find some

Grit is needed, it helps provide calcium...which can be hard to find from other sources, and it also helps them to fully digest their food. It works kinda like a blender in their crop.
I have always gave grit, which is bought and then shipped from www.foyspigeonsupplies.com . I don't want my hen (Beautiful) to get egg bond, I have had that happen in parrots when I was younger, and i don't want that to heppen with my pigeons. I don't know how many pigeons you have, but I have three. I buy 10lbs, and it can last a while. There are also a bunch of problems that can come into affect without the calcium. -Hilly

I do not know any reason why it should not be....it is high cal so that is good..the grains of pigeons are bigger than say doves and finches, so I would think that a bit larger size grit is best as it works to grind the grains so they can digest it. ask the feedstore to order pigeon grit for you it will save you money and be the right size....also foys has pickpot which have minerals in them also and come in those little pots you can reuse for feeding in the nest box. they are not as much as say a bag of grit would be from there.
