Pigeon gender

Can you tell the sex of a pigeon just by looking at the color of it?

Sometimes.

But the birds have to be from a sex-linked mating to tell.

Basic color sex-link matings are:

Blue cock x Ash-red hen (all blue babies will be hens, all red will be cocks)
Brown cock x Ash-red hen (all brown babies will be hens, all red will be cocks)
Brown cock x Blue hen (all brown babies will be hens, all blues will be cocks)

There are also certain color modifiers (like dilute) that can tell you the sex based on color. For example, a dilute cock with an intense hen (no dilute gene), will give you 100% intense cocks, and 100% dilute hens.

Another thing, in ash-red birds, the ones who have black flecks in the tail and/or flights, are cocks.
