I hadn't thought about that for some reason. I know BYC has one of those "what breed, what color?" sections and it does indeed get a LOT of attention. Perhaps with a new section just for the breed ID's, we'd get more threads asking about breeds. Which I would love cause there's a lot of them I have yet to see. And so many that look to close to where I don't know how anyone can tell them apart, LOL

Hi
We do have the Breed of the Week section, which was introduced way back because a few people expressed interest in contributing. As you see, though, some of the contributions never happened, and not too many breeds are represented. The breeds are intended to have one thread by somebody who is well experienced and knowledgeable about the breed, and a 'discussion about the breed' thread. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite seem to have worked out like that for all the breeds, and some sections have the kind of questions and answers which really belong on the more general racing, show and performance pigeons sections. We really would not want to duplicate what we have, so please take a look at that area first. There's no reason why it can't be tidied up, of course, if it may have a use.

A PS to my last post:
One possibility may be (but would have to confirm that) to rename the "Breed of the Week" area and divide it up a little differently if necessary.

It is sad that more people didn't contribute to that. I don't know a whole lot about any other breeds than the racers that I did, although I can research any breed and make a general thread for them.

If this happens wouldnt it be easyer to post a thread to a link That shows the different standards for the breeds . Such as the arizona pigeon clubs standard section. As there are many breeds of pigeons say 250 breeds. And a link would be the easy way. Or getting permission to copy and paste that section to this site. . Far as color well each breed line has a set color standard for those breeds.. And even a link to the breed clubs As it would take a time to record and post a subject on the many breed lines.

Bump, John, I hope you think about putting this up again. Now with these changes going on a Bird I.D would fit right in. There is always threads of people having question about what kind of bird they have. The whole link to each breed is a good idea, but some new members or members in general will be to lazy to actually go through each breed to find what they have. I could only start to list of all the forums that do ID forums, birdforums, reptiles forums, banana forums, probably other plants, and fish, dogs, and cat forums. It only seems right to do it when there is a vast amount of breeds of any one thing, and people are always wondering. This just organizes it for people. Give it some thought.

Otherwise, yes, I think it sounds like a good idea. As Robert says, a link to the standard would be easier. Picture is good, provided it's not copyright. I'd imagine that pics in the 'public domain' are OK if credit is given to the originator, but I admit I'm no expert on that subject Any internet lawyers here? How do you guys think we should structure this? We have the three sections in "Pigeons For Sport" for Show Pigeons, Homing & Racing Pigeons and Performing Breeds. We could have a sub-forum under each heading, to contain the breed ID info for these three classifications, for example. We could (but only if Admin-in-Chief is OK with it) rename the "Breed Of The Week" section, and continue in there (I'd have to do some tidying up of what's there now, I expect - just haven't had time so far). What we don't want is way too many different forums (sections). We already have plenty that's been posted in wrong forums, maybe because new members haven't always got their bearings, or people sometimes just don't check what the forum is for before posting. We do need to stick to breeds, and not go deeper into 'strains' or 'lines' (forgive my ignorance of some of the terminology). We do need to be aware that whatever we all do here is subject, ultimately, to control by the site owners (I don't mean mods & admins). Should be no issues, but it is their server space we use. Pitch in as you wish!

I'm fine with the breed of the week! We just need to get some people signed up for it! Maybe not so much "Breed of the Week", but rather "Breed Profiles", because it certainly has not turned into a weekly thing. I think it'd be better to let people submit them as they feel like it rather than having to wait for a certain week that may end up busy for them. I noticed in the work bench there are quite a few people that never finished/started their articles
I think I might remind them and ask if they are still interested in it. Like I said before, I can study up on any breed and make a thread for it, I just need to know which ones people want to see.I don't believe there is an Indian Fantail one yet (just americans, in which indian fantail threads get grouped in there because they have nowhere else to go). I can do one for them as I have raised Indians for a long time and I feel like I could provide some personal experiences too. ![]() I agree with it only being for breeds. A lot of people call different strains of homers "breeds". They aren't. And there's way too many for that! Although if we had a subforum in the Homing/Racing forum just for strain profiles, that would be acceptable I think. Looking at the Breed Of the Week section, there's a lot of threads in there that could have been put somewhere else. But I think that happens with just about every section here ![]() |
