**Sad day for me....

I lost two birds in two days to what I presume is coccidiosis. One of my birds lost was my very first bred this year and fully trained. I saved him from a bad scalping as a baby and hand fed him till he was big enough to be on his own. Three days ago I had a baby that was not growing fast enough. The other morning I entered my loft to find him dead. I looked him over and his butt was wet green and runny. I immediately inspected all of my birds and found two more of my yearlings with the green wet and runny butt. I quarantined them and medicated my whole loft for the next three days. I also completely sterilized my loft floor, perchs, and nest boxes. I still have one left that is eating and drinking its medicated water.

The only reason I can think of is when the feral pigeon came in my loft and was with them for about 30 mins before I quarantined him due to his bleeding chest.

So for now the rest of my flock are not showing any symptoms but I am keeping a close eye and hoping for the best.

I'm very sorry for these losses. I don't think the feral is to blame. Sounds like salmonella, canker or both.

3 days on meds just does'nt sound long enough, I would use a med just for cocci, I treated my flock for 7 days. did not have any deaths just some green dropping and a bit of a high count from the lab. I used sulmet. those 3 in 1's are really not that good to use.

I am so sorry for your loss.

It is my experience that when a bird has symptoms of coccidiosis, it is usually a secondary to something else going on. Also, birds usually stop eating and they need to be hand fed before and during the course of treatment-(until they eat and drink well), as that brings them down quickly.

Thanks everyone.

I already sent it to the vet for review. I will get the sulmet today. Also, I tried to handfeed them and it wouldn't stay in at all.

why every three months, over medicating can be as bad as not doing any sometimes, esp when it comes to antibiotics, their over use can cause problems. IMO I would only use them with a diagnosed problem or showing signs of a problem.
