Saxon Priests won't eat PeasI purchased three Crested Saxon Priests as my introduction to raising pigeons, and since I wanted to make their transition as easy as possible, I purchased a local mix that the breeder said he had been feeding his birds.
I'm feeding the birds once a day, making sure not to over feed, but I notice that whenever I go to feed them, everything has been eaten except for the peas. Can anyone tell me why this is? |

Some birds love them and some birds don't. It's probably as simple as that.
My question is why are you only feeding them once a day? Mine eat in the morning and just before dark. Especially in the winter they need more food.

I dunno the size of those birds, or the size of the peas, but some of my birds can't eat the small whole peas in the pigeon mix I buy, they're just too big for them to swallow I guess.

Pigeons tend to eat the peas more when breeding. They are a source of protein. If you are not showing or racing your birds, then I don't see that it much matters what they eat? As long as you offer them a variety of seeds, they know what they LIKE and they know what they NEED and will eat accordingly. Give them a the proper amount of feed each day and if they are hungry enough, they'll eat what you put in front of them.
I've got pigeons in different stages. Got 4 that are "just in the loft".........they usually leave the corn but eat most everything else. I've got my Old bird race team that at the moment are not racing, not flying, not breeding. They tend to leave the peas BUT are eating the corn. Then I have my breeders. They eat ALL the peas.........most of the eggs will be hatching in the next few days. They KNOW that they need the protein, therefore, they are eating it. Some do have a preference however as to what KIND of peas they like. 6 out 7 pairs leave the little brown peas but eat all the canadian peas. (those are the white peas? I think?). One pair eats all the brown peas, but leaves the white ones. And I let them. So, I guess what I'm saying is, I wouldn't worry so much about what they are leaving. If I was you, I'd get a container and throw the leftover peas in it and put it up. IF you decide to raise any youngsters at some point in the future, I think you'll find that they birds will eat the peas at that time. They ain't dumb by any means. They will eat certain grains more readily according to the time of year, as in hot weather/cold weather, and will eat others according to what they feel their bodies need at the time. Some fanciers even put a bowl of nothing but peas in the loft when they are breeding, along with the other feed of course, but the birds will eat the extra peas.
