scared of new waterer!

I got my new bullet waterer the other day (white plastic on top and green base with holes to drink from) graduating from a clear plastic tub of water on the floor. I THOUGHT it was great because they wouldn't be slinging water all over anymore.
I put it in where the water tub used to be (beside the food bowls) and even dipped their beaks in the water to let them know it was water.
A few days later I noticed they were staying in the aviary ALL THE TIME "better out than in" I thought....Anyway, it was bath time so I brought the blue plastic bathtub of water. Took out the waterer to wash it and give fresh water. BOTH birds jumped in and soaked their heads drinking like crazy! then went to the food bowls and started eating like they were starved. Then I noticed their food hasn't gone down much either.....
I put two and two together and got six... removed the water monster. I felt terrible. I was depriving them of food and water and didn't even know it.....
It's a good sized waterer so with just two birds I couldn't tell if they were drinking or not. They were scared of it and staying outside so they wouldn't get "eaten" I guess. Now they are inside and happy again...

Any suggestions on how to introduce the waterer CORRECTLY this time?

Try putting both the old and the new waterer in the loft and little by little put less and less water in the old waterer.
Hopefully they will soon learn that the new waterer wont hurt them and start to use it.

It's hard.... I never could teach my to use one either and I tried the way Ed suggested. Don't give up though. I think I caved too soon.

Maybe if you put the old and new waterer side by side, it will make them go near it showing it isn't a bad thing. Or...... just use the old waterer.

I use a homemade waterer. It’s an upside down gallon juice jug with a curved elbow joint at the bottom.
It refills when a bird drinks from it. Far from being afraid, I have a female Chinese Owl that will take a drink and then try and peck at the bubble that floats to the top. Keeps her busy for minutes at a time.

I don't want to use the old one because it's just a plastic tub. They get in there and bathe and foul the water then drink it. I can avoid that by using the "bullet" water thing. It's a super pain to have to go twice a day and change the water. Sometimes I need to travel for two or three days and they need fresh water and food. The wife is scared to open the door for fear they will fly away "on her watch".

They were starving because they wouldn't go near the food that was near the waterer.
I think I'll just set it in the corner-empty-so they get used to seeing it everyday and go from there.
Who knew they would be soo skittish.
