See Ya all signing off!!!

Well ladies and gents this has been a great site with a lot of useful info. id got to go for a bit. ill be back in the fall or spring. heres the scoop. i lost 2 birds for no reason, just died. i took them out and flew them and none of them rolled. not a single roll out of 8 birds. so i took them away and let them go. theres plenty of food and a lake for water where i set them free.

a friend of mine drove 9 hours or so to KY to a kill shelter. she rescued 32 dogs and 8 kittens. one of the dogs had 8 pups 2 weeks old. so im going to help them out and use my 11'x 5' cage that locks to help them with some pups.

i was really disappointed in the birds, they should have done some type of rolling. thats what i get for buying unbanded birds. no one to report them to like the NBRC or NPA. guess some guys are happy running a pigeon mill. sell all they can and not band. i guess i shoulda known when the guy wouldnt fly any when i was there. anyway enough of that. i found a guy local who competes in the world cup and does alot of flys. hes been on the cover of the NBRC book and is a wealth knoweldge. all his birds are banded and pedigree's like a dog saying its a son of # 712 who one world cup or bla bla bla. i now do believe if someone takes the time to band and keeps a family tree of the birds and knows what won what and how there related. they do care and they will produce quality rollers. i will get some from him and get back into it, but for now i need to help out my buddy and his wife and find homes for some pups and dogs. so i will be fostering a few it sounds like.

thanks for all the info, this is a great site ive learned alot. i appreciate all the PMs and chit chat on the back burner along with some good phone calls. you guys hang in there and keep up the good work and warm welcomes. from one new guy to the next, all the kindness goes along way. ill check in time to time to see whats new in the pigeon world. untill next time this is the big Colbyjack signing off, saying ill catch ya on the flip side................. -chris

Chris, I have to agree with SW. "Dumping birds" is no different than dumping a dog or cat and asking them to fend for themselves when being fed and taken care of by humans their whole life is all they've known.
I won't say much about the birds OR where they came from. I've had my reservations, but with nothing to base my "feelings" on, I've kept them to myself.
Live and learn is all I can say. However, regardless of whether the birds would roll or not, it wasn't the BIRDS fault, and you had no good reason to do what you did. You can bet that this little bit of info will be planted in the back of our minds and I would hope that you would be have a hard time getting birds from any member here who truly cares about his birds.
You see, sometimes we make mistakes. I've given people birds who I thought were good people, only to have them turn the birds loose when they tired of them or couldn't keep them for some reason. 4 of those 6 birds probably starved to death. The other two, thankfully, made it home. The birds you turned out won't be that lucky.
So, shame on you. I sure hope these puppies grow up to be what YOU think they should be.......or what will you do with them?
I'm with SW. Pisses me off.

Why would you do that?? They are domestic, not ferals. Their immune system is not the same as wild born birds, and they are not used to relying on their survival skills 24/7. Poor birds.

On the other hand, see you around I suppose. Good luck with those pups!

I'm sorry that you hadn't read any of the many posts on this forum regarding starving or dead birds which had been similarly "let go". Your beef was with the person who sold you the birds. You did not treat these birds fairly. They did not deserve to be abandoned like that.

Are you serious. . .you are all about saving the dogs and cats but since the birds didn't do "what they're supposed to do", you just let them go?? Birds who were raised in cages/lofts from birth and always cared for by humans and provided fresh food and water and protection every day?? But you're saving some cats and dogs so that makes it okay?

Pigeons are not machines or toys that you can throw away when they do not perform according to YOUR expectations. What a hypocrite. I'm sure those birds are dead by now! Shame on you.

Are you out of you mind? Good riddance.

Well, sometimes we have to be the birds' voices. Have to set things right, or try to.

Honestly, I'm still hot all over about it. Just imagining those birds tossed out near a lake or whatever, ugh. It upsets my stomach that someone who obviously seems to genuinely care about animals, can so blatantly disregard their lives because they didn't "work right". I'm also disappointed that after all his time spent here, he didn't come away with a more intelligent view on how to treat his living pigeons.

So, what would you suggest? Pat him on the back and say "that's ok, you didn't know any better"......or just ignore him and hope he goes away? When it comes to the animals, who CAN'T speak for themselves, then someone has to do the talking for them and that's exactly what our members have done. Many, many of us have spent countless hours trying to find where "home" is for a lost bird OR trying to FIND a home for a lost bird because someone didn't think enough of it to band it and it got lost and now we've got some guy who doesn't like they way his birds performed, or DIDN'T perform in this case, so he takes them far enough away that they can't find their way back and says good riddance......have a good life..........you BET we're gonna yell and yell loud and clear. Either these birds will simply starve to death, or if they're lucky, someone will find them, and there you have ANOTHER UNBANDED bird that someone has to find a home for.

What can be said on-line has already been said.

You say you've "learned alot here on PT" - you SURE didn't learn how to take care of your birds! A "Kill Shelter" would have been more humane than what you did to these birds. How painfully sad for them.

No one is getting mad at you. Not me at least. I've got someone to get mad at............colbyjack............it's just that you said you wouldn't think of literally yelling at someone. That's fine for you. Everyone isn't a yeller.........I didn't used to be.........but when I see how these birds are treated, turning my back and saying nothing isn't the answer. And trying to be kind and sweet isn't the answer either.
What he did was wrong and he needs to know that and feel very guilty for it. If you love animals, you don't through away the "bad" ones and keep the "good" ones........and it doesn't matter whether it's a pigeon or a horse.......when you take one on to raise and take care of, that's what you do. Period.
So, if you don't want to "yell" at colby........don't..........believe me, there's enough yellers on this site to get the job done when someone screws up like he did and then TELLS us about it......
