Unhappy

They are about to recieve the death sentence, what can i possibly do to stop it?

Hi all, look I have a major problem.

There is an old man who I used to get white Ringneck doves off of and he has reached the point in time where he just dosen't want to have them anymore. He is currently at the stage of selling his house and is going to sell his cattle and (this is the sad bit) get rid of his doves. He said that whoever buys the house can have them all, (i think theres about 20 or so) and it just so happens that no one is interested in buying so he is going to just take it off the market, sell the cattle and release the doves!

I must tell you all, these doves (white, pied, fawn, albino) are all good quality and healthy doves ranging from babies to adults. I asked him if i could have the white ones (as i have just enough room for them) and he told me that if i were to have them, i would have to take them all. Sure I can fit in a few but to have his whole flock, damn! I then heard that he was considering to just let all go. It's horrible, as all his birds are born and raised in captivity. They wouldn't stand a chance in the wild.

I asked my dad if i could have them all (so stupid as i had no room, but hey, i wasn't going to give up without a fight.) and he said "Hell no!" so now i am officaly stuck in a big feathery mess. I do know, though, a friend who wants ringneck to add to her collection but she only wants a few, having got alot herself. If you people advise me to go to the pet stores, I can't. No body will take them. I really, really, really want them, i want to save them but I just don't see how. All you people are overseas, I can't give them to the RSPCA adopt a pet place, I can't sell them, I can't save them!

I am in desperate need of good advise here so any you have would be GREATLY appriciated by both me and the birds....if i don't do something soon, these poor birds will recieve the death sentence....

If old dude moves just go over there and feed em. Sneak em home a few at a time.j/k This will give you more time to find homes.

Don't despair pigeon poop. At least you have got a start, you have found homes for a few of these birds, the whites with you, and a few others with your friend, and that is a HUGE improvement over what they had before you got involved! Maybe if you ask this older gentleman he will let you rehome the birds gradually. You've only just gotten started, there must be local groups where you are that could help rehome them? I'm sorry I don't have any really useful advice to help you. I hope some other readers in Oz will read your post and be able to offer better suggestions.

Could you ask your dad to let you take them only for the purpose of finding them homes?
You will need to keep your word and diligently look for good homes so you will keep your word with you dad.

Hello,
It is graet of you to want to help those poor doves.
Can you temporarily take them in and adopt them out as you find new homes?

Thank you all so much for the fast replies not to mention sugestions that I will consider. Look, I would ask dad to let me adopt them but I know he'd say no. You see, we live on a normal block, we only have one large avary and that is already busting at the seams with birds. We have one cage up the back but that is already a home for my two fawn breeders who are very territorial. Do you see my problem? Well we just don't have enough room for them all and this flock aint esactly a small one....and I've had enough trouble trying to sell/give away my own....so yeah.....any other advise or sugestions out there?

The house will be empty then? Is it far from you? Can you propose to the old man that you would feed and care for the doves in his own place, untill you found homes for them?

Now this is going to sound stupid but are you anywhere near Australias Zoo?
(Steve Irwins) the reason why I ask is because I know that if you get them involved there won't be any dead birds they could help you in that department. I know they go to great lengths to save animals, see what they can do to help you out. It won't hurt anything right? Besides the birds lives are at stake here. If they can't take them they may be able to get a rehabber wanting them involved, It is all about contacts here.

To Help With The Space On Your End Ask The Guy That has The Doves if You And Use His Cages For Awhile Shot He May even Let you have them If He Is Out Of the Dove/birds Found Out What he Is Doing With His Coop Maybe He May Let You Have That To That Would Give You The Space. I really Wish I Lived Closer So I Could Help I'd Take Them All In. even If These Doves Have To Be In A Small Area For Abit Until Homes Are Found Its Better Then Death.

That's exactly what I was thinking, try to get a zoo or could you contact a newspaper concerning the plight of these bird's? Somebody besides you has to be concerned for their welfare, it's just finding them and that could be solved through an article.

Thumbs down

I just can't win can i?

thanks once again.
Okay here is how it goes. Australia zoo is too far away from my place and it cost quite a bit too both in petrol and entry. My father aint the type of person that will be willing to do all that just for doves. And what if they can't take them? We would have driven all that was with a truck full of doves just to be told they wont except them. I have considered, though, to give them to Queens park for the bird section. I don't know what they'll say though...

I would ask the old man for the use of his cages if he had any. He has one avary and thats all. I say again, there is NO room for them at my house. By the way he lives in Boonah, that's too far away to be doing daily trips to feed and look after the birds. I would of if he lived closer to me but thats life. not everything goes your way. I'm starting to lose hope for these birds....I can only pray that he dosen't release them.

Maybe you could call Australia Zoo, they might know of someplace/someone closer that could take them. The zoo seemed alway's concerned about the welfare of animals, at least on the telly.

Question

Thanks.
Okay Aussie zoo is now officaly off the list. I still have my doubts about Queenspark though. You see, their bird section is for like natives and esottics not common doves. Something tells me they won't want them. I mean their giant avary is already packed with birds of all shapes and sizes. The only doves they have are natives, no imports etc. Catch my drift? it seems that everywhere i turn im always reaching dead ends.
