Unhappy

young pigeon

I have a young pigeon that is not grow like his/her egg mate. The parents have quit feeding. They are about nine weeks old and the one that is smaller than it's egg mate is thin and can not walk. It still uses it's legs and wings to move around. The feathers are still inside the casing that they grow in. It has gotten some of the feathers out. He eats on his own as long as I have it right in front of him. I really want to help this little guy to live. He is as small as about a five week old. Please help!! Thank you

Your youngster that is the runt is probably a paratyphoid baby and you would need to get Baytril or Cipro (antibiotics) to treat it with. You would also need to treat the parents as they are likely the carriers.

Can you post some pictures of your runt baby? Also, make sure it is getting enough nutrition .. hand feed it if you have to.

Please get back to us.

Here are his pictures. The one standing is his eggmate. He/she is the little white one that is laying down. I took a picture of his/her belly while he/she is in my hand so you can see how small he/she is. He is a little dirty but I keep him as clean as I can without hurting him.

he looks like he may have deformity in his feet,,try hand feeding him, give nutritional supplements and speak to avain vet for advice, you may try feeding him a baby bird supplement(feed seperate to his brother/sister as he/she may try to steal food and its important this baby gets good nutrition)

He is the only one that is inside. The others are outside in the coop. Yes I am handfeeding and he is also eatting and drinking on his own. We don't have a avain vet here so I'm going at this alone. Thank you

Thank you for the pictures. They give us a bit to go on. Are you sure that left leg on the white baby isn't broken?

While we're kind of getting our act together here, please get some Brewer's Yeast and start giving that white baby about a 1/4 tablet twice per day. Also make a little towel "nest" for that little one and try to keep him/her in it as much as you can. We want to be trying to keep the feet and legs in the right position as much as we can.

The leg isn't broken. He uses it to move around on his belly. The foot I noticed doesn't lay flat like the other one. I have him in a towel nest but he seems to get out of it a lot. Thank you for responding to my message. Kiwileo89

Then have a look here for posts about how to make a bootie or a snowshoe .. it's for keeping that limp foot in the proper position. Do try the Brewer's Yeast and post back to us, please.

It looks like a deformity. That reminds me of arthritic humans. Can that bird actually move those toes? I have this crazy thought of thinking that it has splayed toes instead of splayed legs.
