youngster question

I have a pair of splash that had youngsters.... I just noticed that the youngsters have tinny feathers on his feet... I never saw a racing homer with feathers on his feet (they are small) Do you guys think the parents were crossed with something else?

Hmmm...could be. George would be best to answer your question though.

Never seen it on homers

It does sound like there is something else in the background and yes, George would very likely have some insight.

Aloha Max,

It's probably just some recessive genes showing itself, nothing to worry about. I have a friend who is a very sucessful racer and has been in the game for over 40 years. He hatched a bird last year with a full frill from a family he's been working on for years.
If you don't like the feathers on the feet, break up the pair and remove the youngster. If you don't care, just fly it out and see what he/she does. (Might just be a champion)

If you have birds with feather legs in addition to your homers, then this is your most likely source. Pigeons have been known to fool around a bit.

My bird that won the 500 mile race last week end has feathers all the way down her legs. Neither of her parents had that but all of their babies did. Probably something in their background. I didn't have any breed of pigeons in my loft then except racers. Not a reason to remove the baby. Just fly it. And even if it doesn't do good, it's not because it's got a few feathers on it feet.

The feathers on there feet don’t bother me......I just don’t want this bird not to be a pure racer and me breed him with a CBS bird that I spent 400 on. Thank you
