Big Improvement (and a couple more questions - sorry!)Hi Everyone!
Just sending a quick update on the little pigeon who had the green diarrhea. Thanks to all of your wonderful advice, he's now doing much much better. The green watery diarrhea has completely gone, and he's so much brighter and more interested in everything. His droppings still look a bit soft - they're the right colour but some of them are slightly runny, so I'm wondering if I should thicken up the formula a bit. I'm also giving him a bit of soaked dog kibble. He's gaining weight really well. He was 187g on Monday morning, and he was 230g before his first feed this morning, so he's obviously digesting it. I'm offering him some pigeon seed and a bit of grit but I don't think he's eaten any yet. At the moment I've got him in quite a small cage (about 18"x12") and I'm wondering if he needs a bit more space. He has the fractured wing strapped up so he can't flap, but would he like to walk around some more, or should he be resting? I can't tell you all how fantastic your help has been - most people are so incredulous that anyone would want to help a feral pigeon, and there's nothing worse than being responsible for a little life and feeling like you might be doing the wrong things. I'm so grateful and so impressed with all of your knowledge and generosity. I've attached some pictures so you can see how beautiful he is. Thanks again! |

Hi Anouk,
Looks like you have been doing splendidly... When this age, they are liable to be restless and anxious to be 'action Birds' who can be in on the action of whatever is going on, be exploring, be socializing....so, having him with you, on your lap, in hand nest, and so on, is good, and good for his restlessness and desire to be in on things. If he has a Wing Injury which needs to be imobilized for a while yet, the 'small' Cage should be fine, even if BORING for him...so ( see above paragraph...) You can 'peck' with him, with your crook'd index finger, and, Seeds on-a-Towell on a table top, or, Seeds in a little cup, him on a Towel, Towel on your lap...either way, works well...and is one more thing you can do together which is fun for you both. Small size whole Seeds or small and medium size are best for youngsters to be learning with... You can guide his 'nuzzling' Beak into a little Deep thing of tiny whle Seeds, and he might 'gobble' them...but you have to keep your finger tips on his Beak sides or it will not 'feel' right to him and he would probably not 'gobble' without them there...and, if he does 'gobble' it will very soon lead to 'pecking'... Have fun..! Phil l v |

Hi Anouk!
What a cutie!!! Sounds like he is doing quite well. You should allow him lots of time out of the cage, while his wing needs to stay immoblized he himself should have some space to walk about, as long as he doesn't try to fly.
