bugs????Hey Everyone,
I have noticed for a while now brown line on Junebugs, and Charlies feathers. The thought nothing of it and thought it to be normal for that type of bird (stupid me). Charlie has been having more of them appear on him. I took a closer look a while ago, and they appear to be some bug. A flat little line like bug, brown in color. When I messed with one, it wouldn't come off Charlies feathers and moved towards the base of the feather to the neck. I'm think mite or something..... Any ideas? How do I get rid of them?? Junebug and Charlie, are the only two that have them, but my other two are a possibility. Charlie is out with them during out time. How did I get them. They have had them for a while, but I'm not sure how long. I use yesterday's news on the bottom of their cages. Thanks! Hilly

Sounds like lice and you can get rid of those fairly easily if that's what they are.
Your local pet store will carry a Permethrin based procuct that can be sprayed on the birds (under wings and rump, and flip to get the other side) making sure not to get in their eyes. If you want to get somewhere around the neck, spray on your finger and then rub into the feathers there. Also, thoroughly clean and spray their living area and allow to dry before returning them to the same. You should be fine, also, newspaper wouldn't have anything to do with it, not to worry. fp |

Here are some links to pictures of Feather mite/lice/louse pictures:
http://images.search.yahoo.com/searc...=43&fr=sbc-web http://images.search.yahoo.com/searc...42406&ei=UTF-8 http://images.search.yahoo.com/searc...12344&ei=UTF-8 http://images.search.yahoo.com/searc...fr=sbc-web&b=1 http://images.search.yahoo.com/searc...21910&ei=UTF-8 You can use either Sevin powder or spray (Carbaryl .026%%) and Scalex (Pyrethrin based 0.03%) products for feather mites and lice and they will also get pigeon fly, just takes a bit longer. Also, Ivermectin and Moxidectin will kill any blood sucking feather parasites as well. fp |
