dieing pigeonI found a pigeon on a sidewalk that was sitting still. To my surprise, a woman approached the bird caught it gently and put into the nearby bushes. When we started talking, she said she worked for an animal shelter, tried to rescue pigeons many times, and that this one has a big whole in its stomach and is about to die. The bird did not seem to be in pain but I was wondering if simply abandoning it is indeed the best course of action. Since many of you seem to be genuine experts on these birds I would appreciate your comment. Thank you, Piotr

Hi
I think most of us who do try to rescue feral pigeons would make some attempt to help it, however seriously injured it would seem to be. There are times when no matter how many we can help there are those who are too far gone, but at least we can try to ease their suffering a little and allow them to pass in a warm, safe place. In this case we don't know, of course, precisely what the injury was, but birds with what look like the most terrible wounds can sometimes be saved. Unfortunately, there are 'organizations' who, maybe through workload of patients, might decide that a particular case is not cost-effective (or time-effective) to try with. I don't say ths is how it was here, but it happens. John

I agree. A friend of mine found a "dying" pigeon that had been hit by a car and had very bad injuries. It had been picked up and put aside to die in peace, but he picked it up and telephoned me.
The pigeon took a long, long time to heal, he was on pain killers and had to be hand fed. BUT Norbert eventually recovered and although he can't fly he has a very happy life in the aviary with his mate Ado Annie. Cynthia

Maybe instead of "stomach" she meant the "crop" because she saw food leaking out of its chest. That's survivable. Take a look at how bad this one was:
