Does this look like 'Pox'?

Hi everyone...

Got this one rounded up yesterday...from his erstwhile feral escapades...

Flies very well and with agility...is medium 'thin' and probably is just recently began to starve.

Vent area is clean...

Poops were only two in 8 hours after getting him, with fecal matter being well formed if minimal, and 'green'... the Urates yesterday were frothy yellow and curdled, and 'pooling'.

Gave him a 60 Mg Tablet of 'Metronidazole', and later a 20 Millilitre formula meal Tube Fed into his Crop.

Nice poops getting made now...if 'greyish' in color...Urates more 'white' now.

Anyway, I have never seen any 'Pox' here before, so I have no experience with it.

The effected area is 'dry' and shows a long history of scarring...

Throat is clear and healthy looking...

In his Mouth, on the afflicted side, is a dessicated, seperated wafer or 'shelf' of thin, fallen scar-tissue or whatever it is, light in color and having slightly seperated layers to it...showing healthy tissue under it, but, as it is still attatched along one long edge, paralell to his Beak, it is hanging in the way of his being able to Eat very well.

Lower mandible is off-set, and this also was likely effecting his pecking success...I assume fro either swelling on the afflicted side, or the influence of scar tissue on that side.

Anyway...

Ideas?

Reminesences?

Suggestions?

Thanks!

Yikes--I've never seen anything like that. I've never actually seen pox (thank God) but that doesn't look like the photos I've seen of pigeons with pox. Perhaps it's the result of an injury?

Hi Birdmom4ever,

Good question...

Maybe it represents a physical injury which also has been complicated with a slight Canker infection...which his system has been holding to a sort of minimum, but which was comproising or complicating the healing of the injury.

Tube feeding him his Breakfast earlier today, I noticed his mouth is getting slimey, and last night it was not slimey...so possibly the Metronidaole I gave him last night, is addressing a Canker infection...and also, it now smells like Canker infections do...so...

Anyway, glad I got him when I did, since he was on the verge of starving, and last night's tube feed became this morning's poop-medley, so it seems his system is working nicely and digesting food well...so he will get three tube feeds today, and four tomorrow...

I added fresh ground, dry, Goji Berrys and Elderberrys to his formula today...so will likely be getting 'purple' poops now...Lol...

Phil, I've never seen anything like it either. The very few pox cases we've had sure didn't look like it. Sure hope he gets better.

That's very strange, Phil. I don't think it is pox. Purely a guess but perhaps canker coupled with a foreign object that abscessed and became encapsulated.

Hi Pidgey,

Oye...

Well, 'mine' looks quite a bit 'worse' than old 'Skizz-bro' did..!

But, we have both seen a lot worse than this though.

Well, time for her Metronidazole Tablet, cut in half, and swallowed half-at-a-time, and a little swabbing I recon..

I think this is a Hen...she's pretty WILD too, and everytime we are going to do anything, it takes some wooing to get things settled down to go ahead then. She seems to like the Tube Feeds and definitely recognises 'Mr. Tube' now when he shows up.

She seems to be feeling better than yesterday, having a little chow in her to run on...and the meds...

Did two 20 ML tube feeds today...maybe I'll do one more later tonight.

I forgot to make sure yesterday's Metronidazole got some ACV-Chaser close on, though the formula had ACV in it and was not too far behind...so, close enough probably...

Thanks Pidgey..!

I'm glad to hear she's doing a little better today, Phil. Terry's guess sounds reasonable. I'm guessing that whatever happens to feral pigeons canker is often a problem since it's opportunistic and when they get injured or sick with something else, it multiplies out of control. I hope you can pull this little one through.

Thanks Birdmom4ever,

It does seem pluasible to me that this is an unusually 'dry' form of localized Canker infestation, which had complicated a possible mechanical injury, a 'cut' or tear or something on the corner of his Mouth...and that he has just been fighting it for however long, bulding up all that heavy scarring...and possibly it has been quite a while indeed that he had been dealing with it.

So, we shall see what happens...

Thanks everyone for your input..!

Well...he's doing well..!

He has good weight...strong...in free-fly now since a few days ago.

We so 'Seed Pops'...so, when he decides it's Chow-Time, he flys over and presents himself.

Wags a Wing and acts like-a-Squeaker...

This works out well...

Pictures tomorrow...

Preening is going to be a problem...unless he finds a Mate to do it..!
