Earliest signs of illness?I have had my birds for almost two years without any disease problems. I do not fly my flock or add new birds without long quarantine. So what are the most common diseases they can get from their environment (not from other infected birds) and what are the first symptoms I should watch for?

In addition, they may still carry Trichomoniasis ("canker") and Coccidiosis, both of which are tough to eliminate entirely. But pigeons can and do live in equilibrium with both organisms provided they don't multipy to such numbers that they make the pigeons sick. It's a good idea to treat them for those diseases a couple times a year as prevention even if you don't fly or introduce new birds. There are many good meds available from the pigeon supply houses. One that I use is Global's Multi-mix which address canker, cocci and worms.

There are also "free floating bacteria" in the atmosphere, you can't protect them from those but the early symptoms that we saw were respiratory ie open beak breathing and making a whooping sound when breathing.
