Eye Problem cont.

I posted earlier and now the thread is gone.

Update of Jack

I took Jack to see Nancy today, who is a local rehabber. She examined his eye and everything else and it turns out Jack had lots of feather mites. She thinks the mites may have caused the problem around the eye area.

Nancy gave Jack a shot of Baytril, sprayed him with mite spray, applied an eye oinment and clipped his wings. She was impressed with his weight and said she was surprised he was able to eat so well, because of his scissor beak.

I will give her a call in a couple days and let her know how he is doing.

Hi Kim and others.
Sorry we removed the threads you had going, but it seemed prudent in light of the turn of events surrounding some member disagreements.
Hope this will not be necessary in the future.
Keep the photos coming.
Regards,
Carl

Jack is doing well.

His eye looks the same but at least it doesn't look any worse. I kinda wonder how long it will take for his feathers to grow back around his eye.
I was also thinking, I put bath salt in his bath water on the weekends and I thought that stuff was suppose to help control mites and other critters. I guess not.

That's great.

Interesting point. I don't know.

I don't have a clue about the bath salt, I've never used them.

Did you happen to ask Nancy about seeing the third eyelid? I didn't even know pigeons had a third eyelid.

Thanks for the update & do keep us posted.

Kim,
The bath salts help with vermin on the bird, but you need to treat the source of reinfestation. I vacuumed and swabbed and still had a recurring mite problem till I lightly dusted all the nooks and crannies of the coop with Sevin.

Pigeons do have a third eyelid. Dogs and cats have a third eyelid. I have never even heard of a third eyelid before. Nancy said whats on his eye is not it.

I plan on dusting the cages this weekend. I do have a spray but I was thinking of trying something else. I searched on a past post and found someone used flea control product with Permethrin in it, a vet suggested it.
I may even vacuum the cages this weekend.

Hi Kippy,

You have probably noticed that when a cat is very ill a white membrane starts to cover both eyes, it starts at the nose and spreads across to nearly the middle of each eye. That is the third eyelid or "haw".

I'm really intrigued with this 'third' eyelid thing.
Cynthia, you mentioned a white membrane will become visible in a cat's eye when they are very ill. Do you know if that's the case in a pigeon as well?

Third eyelid

Hi Cindy,

Yes, pigeons have it. This is a link to a picture of an eagle's eye to show how the membrane slides across:
