I have to say that 24 hours after taping this guy, he seems much more comfortable...he seems more willing to try to move around, wing slap me,
etc...like it is easier, less painful for him to move a bit with his bum leg taped in position. He is using his wings to move around, and does not need to drag a painful broken leg with every move...glad we did it..looking forward to carefully, feather by feather, peeling the tape off in two weeks!![]() |

I set broken legs several times a month with masking tape.It works very well and isn`t hard to take off later. The main thing is that you have it on thick enough to immobilize the break and that the leg is in the correct position. If the masking tape starts to open up,just wrap vet wrap around the tape to keep it on.I leave the splint on for three weeks to ensure the bone callous has formed well. It`s easier to take off if you use thin, small scissors. Many of the birds I set will even perch with their splint on.I always put them on antibiotics too for a week.

Thx for the encouragement..this break is in the femur so we only have to keep the leg wrapped against the body..no stiff splint issue...so far so good.

When I take the tape off at two weeks, they spend the next week in fairly cramped quarters that are just big enough for them to stand and stretch their wings. That allows them to start moving the limb so that it doesn't freeze up. However, there really aren't hard numbers on that--different breaks have to sometimes be handled different ways as some are worse than others.
