Hi,

Well done for caring about the youngster.

Put the bird on aheat pad if you have one, or hot water bottle, well covered - anything to keep him warm. Let him settle.

Try to get it to take some rehydrating mix, in case it hasn't had liquid for a while - 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 tablespoon of glucose or sugar, mixed in1/2 litre of barely warm water.

Vet is the best bet, provided they don't take the bird and put to sleep - but I guess you know them. They should be able to say if anything is broken. If there isn't, then it is possible it needs calcium supplements (we have had doves who cannot stand due to lack of calcium) or actually has some illness. No point us guessing so early though.

Check inside the beak, see if there is any yellowish mass inside. Should be reasonably pink and clear.

Is this a fairly well feathered bird or does he still have some wispy baby hairs?

John

Sometimes fledgelings have a metabolic bone disorder caused by lack of calcium or lack of natural daylight. I had a fledgeling dove that was dragging itself around using only his wings and beak, his legs trailed lifelessly behind him. After giving him liquid calcium with vitamin D in it for a few days he was able to use his legs again.

So as John says, don't let anyone talk you into euthanasia without trying positive steps first.

help

I realized I put this is the wrong section because it is a pigeon
It still has some fine yellow baby hair. Mouth is pink inside no lesions.
Was wondering about PMV I have pet pidg @ home I am going to isolate this bird. This feral flock has history of PMV rescued several with it. I had to take it to work with me So it will be traveling with me home on the train from NYC
to Long Island. Will try to get fluids in when I get home.
Thanks Pat

Hi Pat -

Good that you are familiar with PMV and can help out victims in that flock.

Possible it could have been passed down to this one, but I guess it's just get him comfortable and checked over first.
