HELP!! Sick Fantail Baby

Hello all,

I have a 3 weeks old Indian Fantail Baby which seem to be not okay by its looks. The feathers are not completely grown (I am suspecting Canker) and also on one side the out skin seem to be filled in with air. Its been pumped up like a Air Bag.

Kindly advise... and help me out!!

PS: I use Spartrix for Canker which is available here.

Please click the below link for the photos of the sick baby.

Thanks everyone in advance!!

If the parents are still feeding it leave it alone, it will heal by itself,
Air sac is ruptured, it will get bigger but than go down.

Hello,

Firstly Thanks for the advise..... The parents feed him/her very rarely. I have seen it feeding itself.
Do I have to do anything on the Air Sack? or will it come down by its own?

Chilangz............Baby does not look well at all. Looks like ruptured air sac, and needs to be treated by Vet to release the air. It does not normally go down by itself. The missing /lack of growth of feather could very well be canker and you need to treat it ASAP.

I am not that experienced, I am just giving you my educated quess and hopefully more experienced member will be online shortely will additional advice.

My best advice is to have this baby looked at by a Vet or an experienced rehabber to take the necessary steps to release the air.

I wish both you and the baby the best and a speedy recovery and healing.

Chilangz...........I am quite certain that is a ruptured air sac. Do a search in the forum for "ruptured air sacs" for some further insights.

I wish some of our more experienced members would respond.

I wish you the best.

use a sterile needle and puncture the "balloons" to help drain the air from it. this will have to be repeated atleast once a day until the air sac heals. also giving antibiotics to help with the healing would be good. hope things turn out. keep us posted.

This from Avianweb.com

Air Sac Rupture:

Air sacs are located inside the neck, chest and belly. When ruptured, air will leak from the sac and accumulate under the bird's skin. If air is not released, the tear in the sac will enlarge. The vet will disinfect skin, poke the air sack with a sterile needle to allow the trapped air to escape. Surgical repair / antibiotic therapy may be necessary.

Yes, that's a ruptured air sac. It needs to be taken care of. Better to take it to a vet if possible. It needs to be done with a sterile needle. And I believe your baby has canker. You can't always see it in the throat. He needs to be treated for that. The poor little thing looks terrible. Do you have medication for canker?

Yes. Spartrix is for canker. I believe 1/2 pill a day, at 3 weeks old, for at least 3 days. Maybe 5.

Remember to take the water away after you give him the pill. Wait at least 2 hours before returning the water to him.
