I found an injured pigeon please helpHi
I rescued a pigeon from out my back lane because kids where throwing stones at it and it did not seem to be flying away. When i approached it i soon noticed it was not able to stand on one leg. It does not seem particularly happy to be held but i managed to get the number from the ring. I phoned up its owner and hes asked me to look after it for a few days and then see if it will fly back. Its eating well but i am wondering if there is anything i could do to help its leg? Or will it heel by itself? i feel awful that it could be in pain. If i took it to the RSPCA do you think they would look at it? There are no cuts or anything on the leg but whenever it tries to walk on it it falls over. Your help would really be appreciated! Thanks |

Bless you for the rescue. I hope you boxed their ears, those kids. They did deserve it.
I don't know where you are located but I suspect the UK. Here's a link for some resources. Don't be surprised if the owner of the bird doesn't show. http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/group.php?groupid=21

I went mad at them.. hate hate hate animal cruelty
I am from South Wales the guy who owns it is from Birmingham. He didnt really seem that bothered about him, he said he would come get him in 3 days if he hasnt flown back but he didnt say nothing about how im to look after him or nothing about his leg. My dad is really into wildlife and things like that so we have basic knowledge about looking after it but we have no idea what to do about its leg. Thank you for the link i live like 10 minutes away from the Gower bird hospital. I will give them a ring in the morning. |

You know...if the leg turns out to be unfixable...the fellow may not want it back and so you could ask if you could keep it.

Alot of sites that i have been reading seem to say that many owners of racing pigeons will have it put down if it gets lost or is sick. I dont want that to happen its a lovely looking bird.

He may not do that but it is a concern....so do ask and if he doesn't seem all that interested, ask if you can keep him.

Ok. How would i go about caring for it then? When it still be able to go out? Or would it need to be kept inside?

It would all depend on the leg I suppose.

I have read her that you can use a piece of gauze wrapped around the leg and then use a straw that you would cut open as a split. You would tape the straw and of course the gauze is to keep the straw from rubbing.I would first tell you to take it to a vet if you can or one of the resources that Charis listed.I know that is how you would make a splint but who would know if you are doing the right thing.I do know that many of folks here have one legged Pij's.

I would found out if the owner is prepared to come and pick up the bird. If not then I would take the bird to the Gower Hospital and tell them the owner is not willing to pick up the bird. The broken leg needs to be set as soon as possible.

They can! I was absolutely clueless when I first posted here, learnt A LOT on these forums. People here are very helpful.
PS: They make excellent pets, loads of fun and easy to take care of! |
