I have an adult injuried pigeon!I live in downtown Portland, Oregon. I feed the wild pigeons between the high rises and today I found one in my garden. It has no leg band. It can not fly but seems very alert. I have it in a large box with holes punched in it. I have a heating pad in the box on low. I have given (him?) or her? Pedilyte and he seems to be able to swallow. I offer a few seed but is not eating. I think it may have crashed into a window however I do not know. He? definitely can not fly yet has no visible wounds. I have him right outside my bedroom window and his box is covered. I can not bring him in because I have 3 cats. I called local bird rescues and they will have nothing to do with pigeons other than offering to put him down. This is our world! "It's just a stupid pigeon lady" It's one of God's creatures "not a stupid bird." Can anyone help me or tell me where I could take him to get care? I have a car and am willing to take him anywhere if it means he won't be put down. Humanity just shocks me sometimes at how insensitive some have become. Can anyone help me before it's too late for this poor guy?

I have an injuried adult pigeonI live in downtown Portland, Oregon. I feed the wild pigeons between the high rises, today when I went into my garden I found an adult pigeon unable to fly, no visable wounds and no leg band. I have him? her? on a blanket that is wrapped around a heating pad on low. Everything is inside a large box with holes in. I can not bring him inside as I have three cats. He is right outside my bedroom window with a blanket over the box. I have given him some (unflavored) pedilyte and he appears to be able to swallow. I offered some bird seed but he doesn't appear hungry. I think one of his wings may be broken but I really don't know, I have tried not to handle too much. He seems alert, oh and he pooped one time. I called around to bird rescues and they can't be bothered other than to put him down. " it's just a stupid pigeon lady" one place told me. I still am in shock over all these "so called" rescue places. They said the are a detriment to other native wild life! Since when is one of God's creations a detriment? I think some humans are the worse detriment to all animals! I have a car and am willing to take him anywhere if it means he'll get the proper care. Can anyone help me?

Hi Ravenschild,
Thank you for taking the time to look after this injured pigeon. Your supportive care sounds good and just what he needs at this time. Keep him warm and quiet for the time being and just be patient. I tried looking through our resources here for rehabbers in Portland but I couldnt find any either. I'm sorry but I'm in Canada so my contacts are limited for the USA. Did you try to call local area vets and ask for references to pigeon friendly organizations? Keep him hydrated with the pedialyte, just a few mls once an hour or so if you can. Offer the seed in a deep, heavy dish and just try to be patient. Hopefully in the morning, others will be along to offer suggestions on people who will take him in. |

We'll do our best to find someone to help. Bless you for taking in and caring for this pigeon. I know I can't do or get anyone until tomorrow morning at the earliest, so please hang in there and look after the bird. I/We will get back to you as soon as possible.

It has the whites on it's beak so i know it's definitely an adult. The birds around town are really fed well. I really believe he had an accident. What I really need is a shelter or a rescue place to take him to. I know you are too far just like the other reply/post. And I do have the heating pad on and off. I've moved him into my bathroom for the night but he's safe from my cats and warm. I'm continuing giving him pedilyte mixed with 1/2 water and he has some seed available to him. He is drinking but I think he's losing the fight. I will continue to keep the vigil til morning when I will try to make contact with a vet or something. Thanks for the concern.

Hi ravenschild,
If you wanted to...you can cut some of the toe off of a cotton sock, slip it over him so his head sticks out and it holds his wings against him. It should not fit tightly, but, semi-loosely. Then hold him that way gently with help, or gently between your thighs-knees or in some way anyway, against your thigh when sitting on the bed say, if alone, and... Opening his Beak gently, Put a Seed in there far enough so that he swallows. Do one at a time of as many Seeds as you can, say, fifty or something, one at a time. Roll the sock gently off comeing back over his head. Repeat a few times a day...or so that he gets maybe 30mL of Seeds over half a day...even less would be helpful of course! He might not have eaten in some time, and, regarldess, very likely needs some calories in him... The Poops???? Phil Las Vegas Last edited by pdpbison; 8th July 2005 at 12:39 AM. |

Avian vets in Portland per the Association of Avian Veterinarians (www.aav.org):
Ross Weinstein 6601 SW Parkhill Dr Portland, OR 97239 503-244-6069 This first listing (above) does not give a phone number on the AAV website so I had to Anywho.com that one--he isn't listed under "veterinarians" for Portland in Anywho, though, but can't hurt to call! Mitch Finnegan 4001 SW Canyon Rd Portland, OR 97221 Phone: 503 220-5762 Fax: 503 226-0074 The second listing mentions something about the metro zoo so I don't know how he's affiliated with it--again, it can't hurt to call. This is purported to be a bird hospital in your area: Greenway Pet Clinic 12196 Sw Scholls Ferry Rd Tigard, OR 97223 Pidgey Last edited by Pidgey; 8th July 2005 at 05:29 AM. |

Ravenschild,
Apparently you've started two threads on this one and most of the replies are on the other thread: http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/showthread.php?t=11130 So, if you inadvertently come here, go there! Pidgey |

To PidgeyThank you so much for all the info. I am going to try to contact all three this morning. For you and the rest of any who are following this story. The guy is still with us this morning. He is still alert and I really think now more than ever he has a broken wing. But thanks to you and this wonderful website I was able to help him make it through the night through your helpful care and your instructions. Thank you to those who took the time to respond to my post. And I'm sure "Mr. Harley" (that's what I call the bird) thanks you greatly! I will keep you all posted as to progress.
