I need help with Thunder PidgeyWe just got home from church, I walked in my room and it stank terrible. It's TP's poop. I picked her up and her vent is swollen. She pooped on me and I almost threw up. When she pooped, her vent inside was blood red.
She laid an egg 2 days ago and never laid the 2nd one. Licha

Alice, sorry you're having trouble with Thunder Pidgey. It sounds like an egg issue.
If she is in a cage, put a heating pad under her or get a lamp and place it as close as possible so the heat from the lamp will add warmth. Boil some water and put the pot as near as possible to the cage draping a cloth over both the cage and the pot of water to add moisture to help her pass the egg. This is what our vet told us to do a few years ago to help our cockatiel pass an egg - she said warmth and humidity is the key. Do keep a very close eye on her though to make sure she doesn't get too hot. You can also give her about a cc of olive oil and also rub some oil on her vent.

Licha,
Never had to deal w/eggbinding from a first hand experience, but some links for you to view until more information comes along: http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/showth...light=eggbound http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/showthread.php?t=9262 Also, from Clinical Avain Med by Harrison and Lightfoot: EGG BINDING Pathogenesis and predisposing factors to egg binding are the same as in other avian species. Clinical signs include fluffed-up appearance of a female bird during the breeding period or a female bird sitting continuously in the nest or on the bottom of the cage. The egg can normally be palpated but definitive diagnosis is based on radiology. Conservative treatment, consisting of stabilization of the patient in a warm, humid environment, subcutaneous infusions, parenteral calcium, and PGE1or2 applied to the cervix may lead to spontaneous laying of the egg. If this does not occur, manual removal of the egg should be considered as soon as the bird is stable. Hope this helps, fp Last edited by feralpigeon; 7th April 2007 at 07:56 PM. Reason: citations |

Thank you guys.
She isn't sitting. She is standing and moving around. Alice

Does she appear to have a 'Lobster' like appearance down her back and did you try a hands on to see if you could feel an egg? fp |

Pidgey told me to put her on Baytril and Flagyl.
I read the threads that fp posted and I don't think it really sounds like eggbinding now. I don't know. I give my birds calcium and cod liver oil because I never wanted to have to deal with it. Licha

Well, on the plus side, standing is a good sign. In true eggbinding, the egg gets in the way of letting poop and urine get out so that's where the bulk of the misery comes from and the danger. Licha gave me a call since I wasn't on the computer and just for pure precaution, we decided to go with a Baytril and Metronidazole treatment. I've certainly had hens drop bombs that could decimate entire cities but sight unseen, it's better to be safe than sorry.

No, I didn't feel. Her back seems normal.

When there's an egg in the urodeum, you can definitely feel a movable, hard mass in the abdominal region. There's not a lot back there normally besides a couple of bone sticking straight back on either side under the tail. Between those and the base of the sternum, there's usually nothing but squishy stuff to feel.

I didn't feel any mass in the abdominal area.
She just pooped again in her cage.

Well, of all the pictures that I've seen on PigeonTalk, I don't ever recall seeing that end of the bird before (no pun intended... really!).
I've certainly seen them shoot the nuclear poops before. You're saying that the bird is actually acting somewhat normal, right? Pidgey |
