Injured pigeon found Please help me

Today I found a pigeon who had been attacked by a cat.Now he can't fly and it seems to either be his leg or his wing.He limps around so I am assuming it is his leg.I don't know much about birds, but right now I have him in a big box with water and wildlife birdseed.I also put a lamp in there so he could stay warm.Would someone please help me out and tell me what to do.I don't even know if i am able to touch him.Someone please respond. Thanks

Hello and welcome to pigeons.com. Thank you so much for helping this bird!

You've done well with providing a source of heat, food, water, and a safe abode for the bird. It's OK to touch the bird .. it won't hurt you and not likely you are going to harm it. You do need to check carefully for any wounds from the cat. If the pigeon is wounded, it should be put on antibiotics to avoid any possible infection.

Please let us know where you are located .. once we know this, we can better advise about any possible places to take the bird for care.

Thanks again for helping!

Terry

Thanks very much.I am located in Winona,MN.I did end up picking the bird up and checking it for wounds and I didn't find any.I am assuming that it hurt its leg pretty bad because it won't put pressure on it.He does spread his wings just fine. Thanks for helping and let me know what else I can do.Katie

Hi Katie .. thanks for your location. I'll see if I can find anyone in your area to help with the bird. Meanwhile just keep doing what you're doing. We do have another member in Minnesota, but he's quite a distance from you.

Hi Katie .. you might try contacting this center and ask them if there are any rehabbers who will take and treat pigeons in your area: http://www.wildlife-rehab.org/wrcmn/public/. This one actually has a picture of a pigeon coming in for treatment, but I believe they are about 120 miles away from you.

I'll keep looking. Please keep us posted.

Thank you so much Arty! Perhaps Katie can meet you sort of halfway if she's not able to locate someone closer to her. Katie .. Arty is A-OK, and if you can't get help locally, then please make arrangements with Arty and Rose to help you with the bird.

I am so sorry that it didn't make it. Thank you for making it comfortable and safe.

Sadly, pigeons that are caught by cats can develop pasteurella septicemia very quickly and die before the infection shows.
