Is Grey Feather OK??

Hi everyone,

I am at work and last night before leaving, a pigeon was sitting outside the front doors. A very friendly little fellow and beautiful. I thought he was ill and was worried about him. When I eturned to work this morning, he was still there and looked very cold. He now looks a lot healthier then he did last night and lets me get very close to talk to him. I went on line to read all about him and found out that he is a Marchenero pouter. My question is, is this usual for him to land on a sidewalk and stay? Or is he ill. Please let me know as I already named him "Grey Feather"

Hi SuzanneJack,

Thank you for caring about this pigeon. If he is the breed you say he is, he sounds like a show bird and not feral, thus he is probably not equipped to take care of himself on his own. Does he have any bands on his legs? If he does, he is probably lost and belongs to somebody. If he has bands, would you be able to read and post what they say? If you can, perhaps one of our members can help you find the owner.
If he is a show bird, he probably does not have the "street smarts" to find food, water and shelter on his own and could be weak from hunger, thirst and exhaustion. A healthy bird does not usually "stay put" in one spot like this, especially on a sidewalk.

I am sure others with more knowledge will be along shortly to advise you.

Linda

If he is ill he would be puffed up. As Lin also said these birds don't have "street smarts" so if it not an incovenance it would be best if you caught the bird. It would be out of harms way if you do so; and you would able to get the band #s (if any) and care for this little sweet heart. :)
Good Luck ;)

PS- That's a really cute name for the fellow.

Hello,

If possible can you take Greyfeather in, give him food, water and shelter while something is sorted out for him? Otherwise he could fall prey to another animal or to a "bad hearted stranger".

If you can't catch him you could put down food and water for him.

Thanks Lin

He doesn't have any bands on him and I gave him some crackers with seeds on them. He lets me pet him and he is very friendly. I'm in Palatine IL and wish there was someone to look after him when I leave work, as I live 40 miles away. He has started walking around as if he is feeling great, then laid down again to rest. Thanks for replying

If he let you pet him I'm sure he wont freak out if you pick him up. You can transport him in a box with a blancket over top to reduce stress. When you get him to your home give him room temp. water and some bird seed.
Other people will be along to help.

Hello & Welcome to Pigeons.com

Thank you so much for helping this little one.

How do I get him in my car? and will he be ok for the long ride? I'm really lost here
If he is allowing you to pet him, you should, hopefully, be able to pick him up without any problems. Once you have a hold of him he may try to get away. Don't become startled & let go of him. He will be just fine.

If you have a small box in which to place him & a towel, etc. to cover the box, he should be fine for the ride home.

Please let us know how things are going.

Cindy

Thank God for all of you!!!!

I've just made a box with holes in it, but I don't have a towel or blanket, just paper towels. He just started to eat some of the cookie crumbs that I gave him and started dancing around YAY!. There was a walnut in the cookies that he couldn't break up, so I broke it up for him as he waited, then started gobbeling it down and dancing around again. I hope all goes well when I try to pick him up to take the little guy home (he really isn't so little lol) but he is beautiful. Thanks for all your help and yes, I will let you know how everything comes along.

Thank you ALL for your help

Suzanne

Good luck on the rescue Suzanne.

Anything you have to put over the top will be fine. If it's paper towels, maybe you could clip a couple ends just so the towel doesn't come off since it's so lightweight.

Once you have arrived home, I would suggest placing the box in a quite, warm area of your home, away from family & animal traffic. He will probably be a bit stessed from his eventful day & this will enable him to calm down.

Thank you Suzanne

Thumbs up

Good morning everyone,

I don't know what the heck I'm doing up so early on my day off, geez it's only 4:48 AM. But, I wanted to let you all know that "Pouter" is doing great!!! Yes, I've changed his name, cuz Greyfeather was someone else that I thought about all the way home and didn't think I could bear to think about him, or give his name to someone else.

Anyway, Pouter didn't even get upset when I picked him up and I thought he would be stressed out from the ride, but not at all, he's amazing He is in the heated garage with a night light on and was very happy about his new home. Al, my partner, lifted him out of the box and he was happy to see seed and water. We're going to build him a new house and take very good care of him.

Thank you all for your help and have a great day
Pouter say's thank you also

Any chance of sharing some pics?

Wow, I am glad everything is working out so well. I am sure Pouter is grateful for being rescued...he is very lucky someone like you came along! Isn't it something how pigeons in distress seem to be so good at "picking out" people who will be kind to them when looking for help? Thanks again for helping this poor pij...it sounds like he has a happy new home.
