Need Advice -- Another Very Sick Young Feral

Last night I took in another very sick young pigeon. He is getting worse fast... very weak, lathargic, keeps his eyes closed most of the time and his poop is watery and green. Also, feeling his crop, I've noticed that it's not fluid as is usually the case and some seeds that I gave him, I had to guide down his very thin thoat since they seem to be not moving dow.

Any ideas, please?

Hi Ante,

It is best not to feed sick pigeons too soon, they are sometimes too weak to digest food and they waste valuable energy trying to do that.

The best course now is to keep him warm and rehydrated with rehydrating solution (1 pint warm water, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 tablespoon glucose).

It sounds as if it could be a virus (adenovirus or herpesvirus). You could try antibiotics if you have any, just in case the trouble is bacterial. Aciclovir is helpful with herpesvirus but expensive.

I saw him drinking this morning. However, he seems to be in much worse shape now than when I first saw him yesterday. While he was still flying then, he can barely stand up now.

At hand, I have a very small amount of liquid Baytril 2.27% (for dogs) and several Metronidazole tablets which are supposed to have antibiotic in them. I also have some 500 mg tabs of Valtrex which, I believe is similar to Aciclovir. The question is, how much of these shoul I give him?

Do you think he could have canker? If so, Metronidazole would be good.

The aciclovir dose for an adult pigeon is 29 mg, so I would give 20 to a youngster.

I don't think he has canker. His throat is clear and there is no any hardening that I can feel anywhere. I am worried that he's not going to make it through the night. I am wondering if it could be the first stage of PMV. He is having dificulty to stand up and balance but this could be becouse he's getting very weak. When I first saw him yestarday, I was not even sure that anything was wrong with him excep that he did not seem to be very alert. But when it got darker and the rest of pigeons went to their sleeping spots, he found a dark corner on the ground on the terrace and stayed there. At this point I knew somthing was not right, so I waited untill it got fully dark, sneaked up on him and brought him in. He was a lot stronger then and this was less than 24 hours ago.

Regarding Valterx tablets... I think Valtrex is stronger than Aciclovir. What I have is a human dosage 500 mg hard oval pill. To cut it down to 20 mg which would mean into 25 equal parts would be rather impossible.

I think what I should perhaps give him is some of this liquid Baytril (2.27% injectible solution) that I have. Would you or anyone else know what would be a right dossage for a pigeon? I usede it for mice.

I'd like to ask you a question about that last feral I had a thread recently on who it seems had canker and pox. Well, canker, I think is gone but her entire tongue which we think is pox has turned into a nasty deformed growth to the point that it does not seem that there is any tounge tissue left there. But one thing at the time.

The Baytril 2.5 % solution dose is 10-20 mg per kg once a day.

Sorry, I am not very good with this. I have a syringe which mesures in ml or cc. It goes from 0.1 to 1.0. I don't know how much he weights. He is very light so I am assuming he's under .25 kg. Would giving him 0.2 cc be safe or are we talking about more than that?

I saw him drinking again. He's doing strange things with his neck, slowly extending it and then very slowly sinking down and is falling towards his front not being able to support himself on his feet while closig down his eyelids. His crop is strangly hard like a lump. Since he's drinking I don't think I have to worry about rehydration and for the heat, I've been filling two plastic containers with hot water and placing them next to him.

Hi Ante,

I usually give 0.2 cc because I find that that falls within the 10 - 20 mg rate for any pigeon.

Give him some metronidazole as well.
