Question

Need Help!

my cat bought us a young pigeon back with it, at first we thought it was dead but i noticed it was moving, we got the cats inside and the pigeon started walking around, but it cant fly, we think he has a broke wing.
we've put him in a big rabbit run for the night with a box inside of it with newspaper, and tree cuttings from our trees at the bottom of the garden, to keep it warm, but we dont know what to do next!
please help asap

Can you tell us where you are? If the cat bit or scratched the bird, it is of utmost importance to get some antibiotics or the bird could possibly die and it can happen pretty quickly. With any luck, we'll have a rehabber or a member near you that can help.

Make sure to keep him warm and out of drafts.

Wild bird seed is his choice of food.

Clavamox/Augmenten would be the antibiotic of choice, for cat claw/bites.

Hi,

It is a bit late to do anything practical tonight, but for now..

As Treesa says, he needs to be kept warm. And quiet. If you can keep him inside in a cage or a cardboard box with plenty of airholes and some kitchen roll in the bottom, he would be better off. Most people don't have a heat pad but even a hot water bottle well wrapped would help to keep him from onset of shock.

The antibiotic mentioned is Synulox here in the UK, which can only normally be prescribed by a vet. A bird caught by a cat is probably going to get an infection - cat's saliva alone is toxic. If you know a vet who will NOT put down a sick pigeon, that's a good call.

Off the cuff .. if there is a Pets At Home in the area with an in house vet, it maybe worth checking if they will examine & prescribe for an injured pigeon. I have certainly come across two of the bigger stores with vets who do treat pigeons.

A pic would be good, to help us see what kind of pigeon. Feral or woodpigeon - or maybe even young collared dove?

We'll need to see how we can help tomorrow, I think. There may be a wildlife rescue somewhere around the area. Have to check on that.

John

Hi Beckyboo2791,

If you can PM your phone number, I will contact you tomorrow and if you haven't had any luck with a vet I am about 45 minutes from you. I'll see what I can do to help.

If you can find a vet to look at the wing asap, that would be great, but as John says, make sure they won't just put it to sleep before you give it to them. Do you know what type of pigeon it is?

John I have Synulox from Cynthia so could arrange to pick up the bird if needed, but it would be good if a vet could look at it first in case the wing is broken and needs strapping.

That's great, Janet. Be very handy if there doesn't seem to be the right kind of vet around the area.

Beckyboo2791.

Sorry I might have not been very clear last night in my message. If you do need any help with this bird you can send me a Private Message,(PM),
or an email from here. This way you don't have to put your phone number in the thread if you'd rather not.
(Unfortunately I am only available until midday today if I needed to come to you to allow me enough time to get home for my girls from school, I realise you may not be there in the day). I'll put my contact number on PM for you aswell.

I hope you're bird is doing ok today and you manage to find a vet. Do let us know how things are going.

Janet
