Need Help Now!!!!1I just came home from the SPCA and I was playing with my neibors' dog and when I look over by my avairy I saw a Pij. It had a dark blotch on it's eye and when I got closer I noticed it eye looked like it was "falling out"!! :eek: So I went to go pick it up and I noticed that there was blood down it's leg. :eek: when it lifted its wings to fly away there was a mess of feathers on top of that leg. I caught and it appears to be a bulet hole :eek: It's small and kinda round. I didn't went to look at it for too long cause the bird was getting stressed out. The eye looks like it can't be saved though :( I also check for canker and there is now (I don't like canker go to my ferals :) ) SO......it's in my bathroom in a cage......AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!!!!!!!!! Help me please.
I don't too much money so unfortunatly I can't buy all that special meds. But I'm sure we can try and get them here (it's like vets here put the prices sooooo high it's like they want you to whach your animal die of that illness :mad: ) Please Help me!!! Hi Hilary,
Please put the pij in a dark, warm area of your house. I would suggest placing a 'towel lined' heating pad (set on low) under him. Don't give anything by mouth for at least 20-30 minutes. Then proceed slowly with fluids. Will get back with you shortly. Cindy

Hey thanks for getting back to me so quick.
I just placed her the heating pad (on low). As for the bleeding, it's not bleeding but there "is" fresh blood and it's now scabed over.(so the attack or what ever happened happened not that long ago :mad: ) I also just took pics of the hole but there only one good one and as for the eye they're all blured but I can try and fix and then post it. Just another qu: How am i going to feed it?? It doen't seem to be intersted on the seed (or even water) I put out for it.

I was just wondering, if this is in fact a gunshot wound, the bullet, etc., may have entered the side & traveled to the eye area. How am i going to feed it?? It doen't seem to be intersted on the seed (or even water) I put out for it. Given the trauma this poor pigeon has endured, he is probably in shock & has no desire to eat or drink at this point. I would suggest to slowly begin administering a bit of fluids with an eye dropper. If you are able to whip up some rehydrating solution (see below)that would be great as he need some electrolytes to give him a bit of a boost. Right now, I wouldn't be as concerned with him eating seeds, as I would him getting fliuds. 1 quart clean water ½ teaspoon table salt 8 teaspoons sugar Heat the water just enough to dissolve the sugar & salt. Cool before giving it to the pi. Many thanks for caring for this poor baby Hilary. Please keep us posted on how things are coming along. Cindy For now, I would continue with the heat.

I can't get ahold of the rehab I was trying to call.
What should I do durning the night to keep it alive?? Or should I just leave it be till morning??? :confused: Hilary Dawn

The pigeons made it though the night alright. It's starting to eat and drink. It's also starting to take a few stepes and is very alert. Thanks all. Hilary Dawn :)

It's starting to eat and drink. Many thanks for the update Hilary. That is gread news. How are the wound sites looking? It's also starting to take a few stepes This is wonderful. Since you're not 100% sure of what happened to this little sweetie, I would suggest continuing to keep your little patient warm & quite so as not to cause any further injury. As I saying all along I thought it was a bullet hole; but my mohter and I started to clip away some of the feathers and notice it looke like a "stick" :eek: . As I was feeling it over for any other wounds we came across a large wod of something. It appeared to be dried blood and feathers. We cut away the feathers around this area and found something sticking out of the skin. :eek: :confused: Soo this may not be a bullet wound at all; it could be a stick right though this poor bird or worse and arrow. :eek: :mad:
I can really give too much details cause I don't know very much. But my mom and I "might" make a surprise visit to the bird of prey rehaber out of town (30mins away) and see what he says after she gets off work. Any way I got to go but I'll check up later. Thanks for all the help. Hilary Dawn

Given this updated information Hilary, in my opinion, it is vital that you seek the assistance of the rehabber you are referring to as soon as possible. Came from RehaberAfter my mother got off work she called the rehaber and he said to
come on down(!!!). So we got the bird ready and went down. He look at the wounds on both sides and said that it couldn't be bullet or arrow wound. Said it has to been a dog bite (or another large animal); the "stick" turn out to be "bones" which can't be revomed (he said the bird would be fine if left inplace). There is of sign of infection, so it should heal up with minamul scaring. As for the eye: It's infected. :( We got these antibotic eye drops which he said work well. Other then that he said the bird was in perfec health. So now it's time for a lot of TLC. Thanks for all the help. Hilary Dawn PS- when we were there he took us to one of the avairy rooms and there was a ........Juvinile BALD EAGLE!!! :eek: he was soooo beautiful. I was soo amazed by him I want to take him home.LOL. :p :rolleyes: Anyway thanks for the help again. Post more later. :cool:
