Need Help NowI have an injured mourning dove.
The feathers on his breast are gone & his skin is exposed & raw. It appears to be scraped. He is alert. Right now he is in a box with heat. What would be best to clean his wound? Also, should he have medication? If so, I will have to buy it tomorrow. Going to examine him further in a few minutes. I know all the information I need is already here, but I want to help him right now. Thanks. Phyll |

Hi Phyll,
When my racers come home from hitting a wire or a hawk attack with their breast torn, I like to use golden seal root powder on the wound. I've read where others use neosporin or similar - the same stuff we humans put on skin abrasions. As far as other medications, you might give the dove some probiotic with vitamins as a stress reducer. I'm sure others will be along to give you some advice. I hope the little guy mends soon. All the best. birdy |

Thank you for responding, birdy.
The sweet little dove died less than an hour later. He began to flutter around in the box. I wrapped him & held him. He died a short time later. I think he escaped a cat attack. After he died, my husband examined him further. The feathers covering his throat were gone also. My husband buried him in our yard. Phyll |

I am so sorry Phyll. You did all the right things. Unfortunately it is not possible to guess at any internal injuries.

I'm very sorry, Phyll. I'm sure it was some comfort to the dove that you were there and that it did not die alone. You did a very good thing.
