Pidgey with burned feet; pictures

Here's some pics I thought people might be interested in, this bird burned its feet on a heat lamp. I thought people might like to see the blisters and how they healed. Looked pretty scary at one point but they're healing nicely, though slowly. I think burns are that way. Use the <<, >>, and ^ icons to move around and if you click on thumbnails they should enlarge at least twice. I left the actual pics large so the detail would be clear.

I have no idea how he could have gotten his feet on the heat lamp since it was mounted on the ceiling, he must have tried to land on it somehow. I first noticed him limping badly on one foot several days before thanksgiving, on about the third day he was limping on both feet and though I couldn't really see anything clearly wrong - the blisters just looked like callouses really, at that time, that's when I brought him in and started treating him with a product called Burngel (made by Scarzone). Pretty good stuff!

He's still in the house and looking forward to moving back to his loft as soon as possible, if not sooner!

Ohhhhh..ouch...

This possibility used to worry me so much when I was making Soups.

The Kitchen here is in one big room along with the bedroom and so on, and of course ambient Birds all about.

I got an Electric 'Crock Pot' and moved it into the Workshop...and a hot Plate, out there also. Only a few Ceiling roosting Birds out there.

That took care of that..!

The little Cooking as I do, I do out there, closer to my Work, and no worries about any of the inside Birds landing on a Hot Stove or Soup Pot or other.

Poor little Feet..!

Ohhhhh...

Yes birds in the house really can get into things and you have to be some kind of clairvoyant to predict where they'll find trouble! This made me rethink my heating strategy, to be sure. I really like those heat lamps but have decided they'll have to tough it out without them. I only turn it on now when I'm in there cleaning or hanging around bothering the birds. Yes, poor little him, it was very painful.

Ouch is right. Poor baby. It was interesting to see the progression from the initial burns to where they are now healing. They are looking good now.

Only had that happen (knock on wood ) once. A little dove we were rehabbing decided to get on a burner I had just cut off. Luckily I was right at it and snatched him up. His feet were pink for a bit but never formed blisters. Now, I never let any out if the stove is on.

Did he seem to be in any pain initially? It must have been painful to stand up.

Thanks for the tip about the Burngel.

Oh poor baby, I'm glad he is on the mend.

Can you build like a cage around the heat lamp, using some heat resistent metal that won't burn them?

Ouch--poor lamb. It looks like he's recovering well, though. Like Treesa, I thought of a wire cage around the heat lamp. I think I've seen them sold that way but you also might be able to make one from wire.

I'm sorry to hear about your pij burning his feet, Snipes. I use heating lamps and have had perfect luck (knock on wood) with enclosing them in a small wire animal cage. Then the cord just goes out through the bars. The birds can't get near the bulb, but get the full benefit of the light and heat this way. So far it has been great. Good luck!

I am on the prowl for small wire cages. I wondered how far away from the bulb the wire has to be so that it doesnt' get too hot also? Would a small hamster cage do it? About how large is the metal cage you're using, to give adequate space around it? I will feel OK about using it more when it's safely enclosed, till then I only put it on while I'm out there. It raises the temp. in the loft several degrees in just a short space of time and you can really tell the diff. with that nice radiant heat. So it'll be nice for them to have it on once it's neutered!

I just use a small one, I believe it is a bird cage for finches or such. It is only about eighteen inches across and maybe eighteen inches high. I hang the lamp from the top and the cage rests on the aviary floor. Then I use a bungee cord to catch the edge of the metal part surrounding the bulb, and tilt it so it's facing out, and attach it to the top. I'll get a picture today or tomorrow of it. I used it last year too, and never had a problem with the wire of the cage getting too hot. Once it broke after someone pooped on it; I have a plastic lid over the cage to prevent this but that night they had knocked it off. The bulb shattered inside the little cage, thankfully, so no shards were near the birds. Now I make sure the lid is secure and they can't knock it off; I also put a cover over their water at night so they can't splash drops onto the heat bulb. Good luck!!!

If you have a Freecycle for your area, you can probably find used cages there or perhaps on Craigslist.
