pigeon can't stand

Hi Everyone,

I have a month and a half old pigeon and he can't seem to stand. He seems to move around by pushing himself with his wings. He has no injuries and can move his legs, but can't seem to stand or walk. He is eating well and seems fine otherwise. Does anyone know what could cause this, or do I need to take him to a vet? If so does anyone know a vet in the Appleton area of WI, that will treat pigeons?

Thanks,
katiescritters

Sorry to hear about the youngster, if he seems normal in every other way, it may be a calcium deficiency, or there may be something else going on.

I would administer a dose of calcium from either calcium syrup or a good pigeon multi-vitamin mineral. Calcium with phospohorus and vitamin D3 play an important role in the structure of skeleton in growth and body functions.

I would also give the bird some probiotics to help with absorption.

Make sure the bird gets plenty of red grit and oyster shell grit.

It would be wise to get the bird a check up also as it could be Salmonella or something.

Here are some resources.

Just out of curiosity, was he ever able to stand or is this a chronic condition? How did you get the bird?

Hi All,

I don't think this pigeon ever could stand up, he just can't seem to get his legs to work. I've tried to help him get up but he justs falls over. He doesn't seem to be unhappy or anything, but I just don't know why he can't stand.

Thanks for the help,
katiescritters

Sure would be nice if you could get an X-Ray to see if there was a developmental problem of the hip joints. Anyhow, the sciatic nerve runs through the kidneys in pigeons and sometimes inflammation or swelling in that area can cause varying amounts of lameness. Treesa already said some of the stuff that you can try and I'll see what else I can find.

If there is any inflammation, or swelling, you should also try Neem oil, topically as well as internally, as it is a powerful antibiotic, antiviral, as well as anti-inflammatory.
