Sick Pigeon Outside My House

I went home from school, and I found this poor little guy, hiding in the corner of my house's stairs. I went inside, and immediately told my mom to give me a hot dog bun to feed it, and it automatically went and eat it (with the other birds flying by to eat it too). Now it's 11:40 p.m., and it's standing outside my window (so every time I open the curtains, I can see it). I really want to bring it in, but unfortunately, my mom is too evil to care - she kept saying just leave it there, but that just make it more vulnerable to cats, and other birds. What should I do?

Hello xjenny and welcome to Pigeon Talk. Thank you for your concern for this fallen pigeon.
Unfortuately if a pigeon is layiing low on the ground, it is not a good sign. Something is wrong with him or her. It is difficult to determine this without actually looking at it closely for signs of wounds or other factors that are causing it to be ill.

Warmth is the key to saving this pigeon, but unfortuately if you can not bring it in, it will surely pass away, if a cat or other predator to not get it first.

it's not laying low to the ground anymore, my window is actually high up... probably up to my waist. First, it had to climb up the stairs, and I have about 4-6 stairs to my porch, and then it had to fly up to my window, which, like I said, it up to my waist. Of course, that's just a guess, but I'm sure that's what it did. Any chance it is able to survive?

I'm very upset. I'm just gonna pray to Saint Francis of Assisi tonight real hard. Lol, I know I'm overreacting, but it's heartbreaking seeing something that is weak and vulnerable. I wish my mom would allow me to bring it in. The bird seem to like my house... out of all the houses that the little guy could've choose, he chooses mine. I think it's because I'm the only one that cares for it in my neighborhood... or maybe it just randomly pick and chooses.

Is there anyway you can convince your mother to allow you to take in the sick pigeon until we can hopefully nurse it back to health and then release it?

I'll try... even if the whole house will turn against me (I'm the animal lover of the house, so they all are careless people). I'll set up a cardboard box, and I'll put a towel in to warm it through the night... I'll check back and notify you's if my mom finally give in!

Hi, I just convinced my mom, but all we can do is put it in a box, with a tiny, tiny towel outside. I'm not sure if it's able to escape without our help, but there's a huge box gap at the top, and I'm SURE it can breathe. I'm also sure it's a lot safer, but I'm still unsure. Do you want me to take a picture, to show you what I did?

Welcome to Pigeon-Talk Jenny.

Many thanks for lending a hand to help this little guy.
In what general area do you live? Perhaps there's a member nearby who could assist you in caring for him.

Cindy

Please thank your Mom for us.

A picture would be great.

Not really, I live in a street with careless people. When they DO feed the birds, they throw it out in the street, where the poor little guys get hit, and run over by cars. I liter on my own side of the street just to feed and keep the birds safe. I'm probably the only person here that can care for this fella.

I just want to know if the box idea is a good thing. I'm afraid for him. If I can, I would bring it inside my house - but sadly the only thing my mom promise me is putting it in a box, with a tiny towel (scrolled together ) and let it sleep there until it is healthy. I'll feed it hot dog buns, cause that's all I have, and I'll give it some water too. Tell me what else I should do to help this guy.

I have to take it tomorrow, I'm sorry. My mom is yelling at me again, but I was thanking her, and letting her yell at me for once. Lol.

Thanks for the help, I'll post the picture tomorrow.

hi xjenny, thanks for doing what you can for this little one. A small rolled up towel in the box will be better than nothing. Perhaps you have an old ratty t-shirt or something else soft like that you can add for padding. If the box is fairly secure and somewhat predator resistant, that will help. Better to have a fairly snug fit as opposed to something so open that a paw or snout of a curious and hungry passer by can get in.
If this little guy makes it through the night it will need food and water to survive. Is there any way you can get some seeds as opposed to bread to the guy.
Keep us posted -- I know that lots of us will be checking in to see how things go for the three of you (the bird, you, and Mom).
Could you post your general area, perhaps we have someone near by that can help you with this bird should you need some hands-on assistance.

Most of us will be headed off for bed if not now, very soon. thanks again for helping this little one.

Hi Jenny - thanks again for helping this little guy/gal out. How'd s/he do last night?

As Cindy mentioned -- if you wouldn't mind letting us know your general location, we may have a member here that can take over.

Besides - we ALL want this to be a good first experience for your Mom too... good experiences always make the next time something like this comes up MUCH easier to address (that was too funny when you said you let your Mom yell -- LOL).

In any case - let us know how the little one made out last night and thank you for caring!
