Update sick unknown pigeon

Jenfer-Thank you for your help. I went to the email and found Phyl in Malverne. Will call tomorrow or after holiday. Thank you for the assistance. I'm getting a bit less confused thanks to everyone who helps.

Jenfer-I'm sorry that I mixed up your msg with administrator. Just wanted
you to know that when I called the animal hospital in Westbury the woman
who answered the phone said they were booked up and unable to assist.
She did say that Dr Pesek was in today but they couldn't take anymore bookings, even when I asked about tomorrow, as well as the next day. I
look back now and think Jenfer is so correct about it being an emergency
facility so how can it be booked up. Live and learn. I have a phone number
for a place in Malverne but I will try Westbury again if necessary. Maybe I
shoud have used the term "rehabber". I'm new to all this and grateful for
all the assistance. So, thank you Jenfer. Katy

Hi Katy,

Just wanted to see how Pepee was doing... I searched around the web a bit and could find listings for emergancy animal clinics but since I'm not familiar with Long Island they could be way far from you.

Is this place anywhere near you: Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island -- http://www.vmcli.com/ They are located at 75 Sunrise Hwy, West Islip, NY 11795-2033
"Veterinary Emergency Services: If possible, please call the hospital at 631-587-0800 to notify us that an avian or exotic pet is on the way with an emergency. This notification allows us to be better prepared for the specific emergency you might be coming in for, and to notify our board-certified specialist that you are on your way during non-appointment hours."
I don't know anything about them but figured I'd pass this onto you since it says 24 X 7 for emergency services.

Please keep us posted on Pepee

Dr. Freilicher works out of VMCLI, but I suspect an emergency visit will be very, very expensive (in the hundreds). I also don't know what her experience with feral pigeons is. (I've been there when other wild birds were brought in; the receptionist referred the person elsewhere.)

I think bringing the bird to Dr. Pesek is a surer bet.

Jennifer

Help!

I just spoke to Katy and the pigeon is doing well. Both Katy and myself have tried repeatedly to contact Phyll today and the number is either busy or rings and rings. Do any of you have a cell phone number or email for her?

Phyll and her husband do pick up and transport of sick/injured pigeons. They don't rehab themselves and don't have the space to hold another pigeon.

I know for a fact that Dr. Pesek is on at Nassau Animal Emergency tonight, so if the pigeon needs to be seen immediately, that's where I'd go.

It does NOT need to be seen immediately. Katy does need someone to take the pigeon.

I can guarantee you that Phyll won't be able to take the pigeon from her.

Dr. Pesek has always taken drop-offs, so unless something has changed, there would at least be a chance she could take him. If it can wait until Friday, I'd see her at the other clinic instead of going through the emergency vet, which can be very busy.

She can also try getting an appointment with the Wild Bird Fund, but there is no guarantee that they will be able to foster the bird.

From posts on the NYCPRC list I can see that Phyll and Bob were out earlier today rescuing a needy pigeon. It's been a long time since I've talked to Phyll, but in the past it was always difficult to get through on the phone. I think their internet connection uses the phone line but could be wrong.

From what I know, Jennifer is correct in that Phyll is not able to take in birds for rehab, so I would suggest that Katy either takes the bird to Dr. Pesek, to the Wild Bird Fund folks, or perhaps joins the NYCPRC group which is on Yahoogroups to try and find some local assistance. Though it works for those of us who are members of NYCPRC to "ferry" messages back and forth, it isn't really the best way to go .. things will go a lot faster if Katy is directly "talking" to the NYCPRC folks. There is also the Pigeon People group and the NYC Bird Club .. either or both of them may be able to assist also. I just have more familiarity with the NYCPRC group so am suggesting them.

Terry

Katy,

Here's the link that will take you to the Yahoo Group NYCPRC that Terry mentions: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/NYCPRC/ It would be a good idea for you to join that group - likely you'd find someone to help pretty close by. For example, Sam is a rehabber who is a member there - you can try emailing him at samlg@earthlink.net -- see if he can help. But it would be more effective for you to join the group and post about your situation.

And here's the link to the New York Bird Club (http://www.manhattanbirdclub.com/) - they have a message board as well where you can post.

Good luck

sick pigeon unknown cause

Jenfer are you online? I'm not great with computers. Could you call me direct
if I leave a cell phone number for you? It would be greatly appreciated. My
cell number is 516 330 1912. I'm hoping you can assist me since you're more
local to where I live. Maybe Dr. Pesek is my answer from what you have written. Any direction is appreciated.

Pigeon Peeps Are The Best-Sorry I'm so late with an update on Pepee the Pigeon but he is doing well thanks to all who offered advice. I am impressed by each and every person
who helped me thru this whole process. I took Pepee to Dr. Pesek at East Islip Animal Hospital. Not even a blink of an eye from these people who told me they had treated
pigeons, three squirrels that day, as well as the usual array of assorted animals...Amazing. I called today to find out how Pepee was doing and I was told that
Dr. Pesek had taken the animal home. They couldn't tell me what was wrong with Pepee
nor what the lump was on his crop but I know he is in very capable hands! They told
me I could call back next Tuesday when Dr. Pesek was back in the office. These people
are very busy and they tell me it's okay to check back as much as I want...Wow. Then
tonight I see a message on my cell from a person on Long Island (where I live) and that
person is offering to help me too. So Rocky, Jenfer, Charis, and Dr. Pesek, to name a few THANKS. I wasn't a pigeon person before but I am now. Each one of you helped me
thru this whole process in your own ways. I will always be grateful for the help I received and I'm sure this pigeon named Pepee will always be grateful also. May all of
you receive the good will you have sent my way. Sincerely, Katy Thorne
