Sick pigeon unknown causeI've found a feral pigeon and have tried to hydrate it as per this website. The pigeon appears to be an adult with eyes that are black in the center,
ringed by orange. All feathers and tailwings are intact. It can walk on its feet but doesn't seem able to fly. When I approach it sometimes makes a funny noise. Poop is mostly black and white now. Did see green in beginning. Only thing I notice wrong with it is the are below the neck seems a bit swollen to me. Sometimes Pepee the pigeon seems okay (other than flying), but at other times the area below the neck seems more swollen than at other times. I'm totally out of my league here. Pepee pigeon is in a big box and I've gotten over my fear of Pepee and have touched him on his head as well as down his back to comfort him; besides talking to him. Is there someone with more expertise in my area? I live in Levittown, which is on Long Island, New York. There are no tags attached to his feet. Thanks to anyone who can help us. ![]() ![]() |

Katy...the area below the neck is probably the crop. The crop fills with food when birds eat and as the food moves through the body the crop empties.
Can you post a picture of the bird? We do have a nes member on LOng Island that may be able to help and I will see if I can find her.

Well, you're the second Long Island person to show up needing help in the last day or so. Don't suppose you can take and post a picture of the bird and the swelling, can you?

Pidgey-I sent a private email to Charis or at least I think I did. Not great with computer.
She is looking for a contact on Long Island. I am so grateful to all the people on this site and the information they have provided. I went and told Pepee the Pigeion-"Don't worry, help is on the way>" |

Where, exactly, is the swelling? How far down from the lower beak is it?

Katy,
Dr. Pesek in Westbury examines ferals, usually for free. On Sundays, she's usually at Nassau Animal Emergency from 8 am to 8 pm: http://www.nassauanimalemergency.com/ Maybe she can examine this bird for you today? (Call ahead and see if she's there.) Jennifer ' |

sick pigeon unknown causeI don't know if my last post went on the site. Thanks to all with helpful advice. I tried Dr. Pesek at hospital on Old Country Road in Westbury. They
are so booked they can not help me at this time. I asked if they could help me in a day or two but they said they are overbooked for days at this point and wouldn't be able to assist me. Pepee is hanging in there and seems alert but I'm still confused as to how to help the poor creature. Pepee still has this lump below his neck, where the chest begins. I can't post photos because I don't know how to do this. Charis...do you have a contact for Long Island? I'm in Nassau County. Thank you. ![]() |

If you would email me your phone number, I will continue to try to find someone to take the pigeons. Because this is a hoilday weekend it's a bit more difficult to find someone available. I promise I won't stop trying, so just hang in there and do the best you can. We will do what we can to answer any questions or concerns you have until then.

Katy,
Nassau Animal Emergency is an *emergency* clinic. As such, I'm not sure how they can be "booked" days in advance? If this pigeon seems stable (eating well, pooping well, alert and active), you can see if you can get to see Dr. Pesek at her other clinic: http://www.westburyanimalhospital.com/. She's usually there Fridays from 3 till about 7. You can call and make an appointment and tell them it's a rehab pigeon. The other option is to call back Nassau Animal Emergency to see when Dr. Pesek will next be on, then call back then and ask if you can ask her a question about a rehab pigeon. She's usually on Sundays 8 am to 8 pm, Mondays 8 pm to 8 am, Wednesdays 8 pm to 8 am. (Since it's a holiday weekend, I don't know if her schedule is different this week.) Jennifer |
