Thanks everyone

Thanks everyone who helped me take care of the sick, lost racing pigeon I found. Cindy and Terry - thank you very much for your guidance and support.
Monday morning the pigeon was really having a hard time breathing. We didn't think it would be able to hang on until Tuesday when the medicine was supposed to get here. (Thank you Cindy.)
My Mom called the vet we take our pets to. She said she had Baytril, but wouldn't prescribe TWO pills to hold us over til Tuesday without seeing the pigeon - which she refused to do. My mom told her she was no longer our vet and we would take all our pets to someone else in the future. We made arrangements to take the pigeon to a local wildlife rehab. (Thank you Fred and Terry for the info.) But just as we were leaving the house, the vet called back and said she still wouldn't see the pigeon, but she would give us a liquid antibiotic.
The vet gave us Sulfadived. We gave it to the pigeon, but he must have asparated on it or something because he started choking and, within seconds, he died. I'm not really sure what happened. I was very careful not to put it in the hole in the tongue. I gave the medicine the same way I've been giving the rehydrating solution for days with no problem.
I'm glad I found this website. When the owner told me I could keep his sick racing pigeon, I don't know what I would have done without the help of the good people here. I've learned alot, and I've found a new hobby. Anyone know where I can get a good deal on a healthy homing pigeon?

I'm so sorry

Hello James,
I'm so sorry the little pij didn't make it.

Like I said earlier, no matter what the outcome would be, that little sweetie knew you were helping him & greatly appreciated your love & kindness.

I would also like to say, "Thank you" to your Mom for her support.
I'm so glad to hear you are thinking about getting involved with pigeons. They are wondrous birds.

Don't be a stranger. When you have the time, we would enjoy hearing from you.

Cindy

I am so sorry for the loss of this sweet pigeon.
James, you did a great job, trying to help him. Many thanks to you and to your mom.
The bird died in loving hands and knowing he was loved and cared for.
As Cindy stated, we'd love to hear from you again.

James,

I'm so very sorry the pigeon didn't make it. You and your Mom did everything you could. Sometimes they are just so sick and so far gone when we find them that there isn't anything we can do to make them well again. Bless you for trying!

If you have a local feed store, ask them if there are any people who have pigeons. The feed store will know who is buying pigeon supplies and food. They may be willing to put you in touch with someone in your area or you can search on-line for pigeon clubs in your area. Many times club members will give a bird to someone just starting out. Another possibility is to go ahead and contact the local wildlife rehabilitators and see if any of them have a people who has recovered but now needs a home .. such a bird will most likely be handicapped in one way or another but would still make wonderful pet. Your local animal shelter or humane society would also be good places to check for a pigeon needing a home.

Terry
