This Pigeon Must Have Nine Lives ..Was at the duck pond park late yesterday afternoon and spotted
a pigeon all by itself and standing on the base of the large sign that carries the name of the park. This was one of those deals where something just didn't seem to be right, so I approached the bird, and it tried to run away from me. It would run a few feet, fall forward, try to flap, and then run again. I wasn't able to catch it by hand so got the long handled pole net and tried again. After one failed attempt, the bird made a valiant effort and managed to get about four feet off the ground and headed across Ridge Route Drive (4 lanes of busy traffic and a median strip). It made it across and up to the top of a block wall enclosing the backyard of a home. I went across and made one more failed attempt to net the bird .. at this point it dropped down into the yard. I made a mad dash to the van and drove into the residential area and was very fortunate that the owner of the house was home and willing to look for the bird. I was watching through a wrought iron gate as she left her house and went into the yard .. I just about fainted when 3 very large boxer dogs can trundling after her. I suggested that she put the dogs back in the house, but she was unable to get them to go in. A quick search of the yard did not locate the bird, and I was ready to leave when she suddenly spotted it well hidden in some dense foliage. She kindly let me in, and I was able to get the bird while being closely scrutinized by the dogs. This is one lucky pigeon .. most likely survived a hawk attack, then survived the crossing of Ridge Route Drive, and then missed getting found by the three big dogs .. There is a large wound to the lower chest/upper abdomen and smaller wounds under each wing. I think this one will make a full recovery .. pics at http://www.rims.net/2005Mar21, but they are not pretty. Terry |
