Update on Pesto

Hi everyone! Well good news is she hasn't had an episode in 2 days. I took her to the vets today and the Dr. examined her and she hasn't lost any weight and her poops are normal even with tests run. She looked down her throat as far as she could see/w light and everything is clear there. I mentioned to her how someone here said to maybe treat for Air sac mites and we did that today. What she wants to do is take one thing at a time and one test at a time, see what happens and go from there. Her practice involves domestic birds (parrots and such) but she is the only vet around here I can take Pesto to. On our last visit 2 years ago with almost the same exact things happening everything came back negitive except her Calcium level was very very high due to the fact she was gorging on Calcium grit, So I took it away and also switched to filtered water and she was fine. The vet thinks she may have had a large seed wedged in her throat and couldn't free it, I explained to her that when she seemed to have a hard time breathing I would kind of massage her throat and crop and it seemed to help. We have to watch her very close to see if she has yet another one of these episodes, then we will start up with the expensive tests again. She did tell me to get some Spartrex and keep it on hand. That is all I can tell you from the visit today. I am hoping we won't see another one anytime soon. Keep your fingers crossed today cost $93.00 if she needs the tests done then those are extremely pricey, something I just don't have at this moment.

Thank You to everyone with all the advice and all the kind words, I can swear on the holy bible if something happens to Pesto I will be one heart broken Mom

Cindy,

I'm so glad to hear that Pesto has been ok for the past two days and that the vet couldn't find anything. Will hope it was something temporary.

Hi Cindy,

What about the Metal thing in her Crop which was seen on the X-Ray?

I mentioned it to her and she didn't go into talking about it. She did mention that that was in 2005 and that she reminded me of the vist in Dec 2005 checkup and the x-ray showed nothing so maybe it passed. Last night was her 3rd night without an episode so so far so good. I did also mention to her when some of the rehabbers get a pigeon in with an obstruction in that general area they actually open it up and explore by themself. She made a funny face in disbelief.

I imagine so. A breathing obstruction is an entirely different thing than a crop problem. I've never had to cut open a crop or anything else for an obstruction. Most of the times I've dealt with a crop, it's been to sew them up from a wound. There was only one reference on here (Pigeon-Talk) that I know about where someone had to cut into a crop to remove an obstruction and that was a roasted peanut:
