Question

Watery Poop Question

Got a question... One of my birds, Gonzo, the one with the white primary flights and checks... seems to have real watery poops, with what looks like undigested seeds in it. The only time I see him do that is after feeding time, but then again, its not like I get to watch him all day or anything. Anyway, other then that, he seems "normal", eats, flys around, preens, is alert, bathes, basically a pigeon, its just he does this watery poop thing? Can't say one way or the other if his poops are normal at other times and this is just an after dinner thing or not??

Any thoughts?

When a bird passes undigested seed, it usually means that there is an inflammation of the gizzard or the pancreas is deterioriating. The bird needs a GI series and a series of blood tests to determine if this is there is a generalized infection that hit the pancreas or if this is an organic disease process.

Hello Zig,

Sounds like something is wrong, I remember hearing about this before but can't recall the the exact problem as to why pigeons pass undigested seed.
Hope someone will be along shortly to offer some advice and what to do about it..

You probably are already giving grit, right?
Something else must be going on with that bird.. For now, just keep an eye on him.

Mary,
No grit. If this is an inflamed gizzard, the grit will pass right through it into the intestines and possibly scratch them on the way out.

There it is.. Fred's advice is what I heard before. I hope it's not as serious as it sounds though

Try to locate a good avian vet and have him checked out..

Keep us posted and let us know if the droppings improve at all.

Yes, Fred. Thanks for posting that..

Best to remove the grit or seperate the bird from the others so he can't have access to it.
