What's Ailing Poly?

Hi,

This maybe nothing to worry about but my one eyed bird is just not himself right now.

As he's the only male amongst seven hens, he's always so full of himself and displaying any spare moment he has when not egg sitting.

He's moulting heavily, I've never seen so many feathers on the floor each day and I can see the holes in the side of his head through them now.
He's still sharing his egg sitting, (dummy ones) with his mate but when he's off duty he'd normally be chasing all the others around. For the past few days he's just sitting quietly.

Not having seen any of them moult like this before, is this normal behaviour, and is this what's likely to be getting him down?

If so, is there anything I should be giving him to boost him up?

Thanks

Janet

You may be seeing a "hard molt" or the effects of canker, because I can't see the bird I can't give you a real opinion.

Since your bird is listless, it may be a good idea to treat for canker. How do the droppings look?

Hi,

Droppings seem ok. It's a bit hard to check which ones are his as another two hens are always sitting next to him when he's off the nest, but I did a check around where he's sitting. Also couldn't see any obvious signs of worms in them.

Lots more feathers around him this morning. I'll give him a Spartrix as a precaution as you suggested, thanks.

I was just wanting to get an idea as to whether just a moult gets them down to this degree as I've never had one moult as much as this before.

Thanks anyway for replying,

Janet

Poor Poly!!

I know molts are supposed to be hard on the birds and Poly sounds like he is having a particularly heavy molt!

Hopefully, IF Canker, the meds will help. Perhaps grains or vitamins that help with feather growth/molting would be helpful. Do you have access to anything like that, Janet?

Sending COMFORTING LOVING HEALING THOUGHTS WITH gentle hugs and scritches to Poly!

Oh thank you Shi, I've passed on your scritches to Poly before I put him to bed !!

I've been out and bought some tonic to put in his water. I phoned this man who homed a fancy pigeon I had last week , and he recommended this. Smells horrible and makes the water brown, let's hope he'll be thirsty enough to try it !!
I used to tell him off for being so noisey and winding up the girls, but I hate it now he's quiet, the place is as dead as a doornail. Hopefully he'll be back to his old self soon.

Love back to you and yours,

Janet

I have heard that a hard moult can really throw them off for a while. Hoping that's all it is.

Thanks, I've not heard of hard moult before. He's still just sitting dozing most of the time, but does go and sit on his nest when it's his turn, so he's not totally unaware of things.

It's amazing how quiet all the others are at the moment, seems to be having an effect on them all.

If it's just the effect of a hard moult, can you say generally how long it might be before I can expect to see an improvement?

Janet
